The BIWAKO Biennale is recognized for integrating public spaces with art, first held in 2001 in the vicinity of Otsu City. Since relocating to Omi Hachiman City in 2003, the festival has revived historical buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods, such as former traditional merchant houses and sake breweries, for contemporary art installations. As it celebrates its 11th iteration, the 2025 event is expected to gather increased attention due to concurrent events like the Osaka-Kansai Expo and the Shiga National Sports Festival, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
