WHILL Corporation to Supply Mobility Services at BIWAKO Biennale 2025
WHILL Corporation, based in Shinagawa, Tokyo and led by CEO Osamu Sugie, has announced its participation in the upcoming
BIWAKO Biennale 2025. This international art festival will take place from
September 20 to November 16, 2025, in Omi Hachiman, Shiga Prefecture. WHILL will provide its innovative mobility service, enabling convenient and accessible transportation throughout the event.
The BIWAKO Biennale is recognized for integrating public spaces with art, first held in 2001 in the vicinity of Otsu City. Since relocating to Omi Hachiman City in 2003, the festival has revived historical buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods, such as former traditional merchant houses and sake breweries, for contemporary art installations. As it celebrates its
11th iteration, the 2025 event is expected to gather increased attention due to concurrent events like the Osaka-Kansai Expo and the Shiga National Sports Festival, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
To foster a welcoming environment while preserving the town's scenic gravel paths and elevation changes, WHILL has been selected for its
WHILL Mobility Service. This service aims to create an inclusive experience that allows everyone—regardless of age, nationality, or physical ability—to enjoy art comfortably. The selected model,
WHILL Model C2, is a premium mobility device designed for durability and maneuverability, capable of handling uneven terrain and providing smooth rides. It allows users to navigate busy areas safely and comfortably, making it easier for those typically unaccustomed to using wheelchairs, including individuals relying on canes or families aiding their loved ones, to explore various artworks and enjoy the urban landscape at their pace.
The WHILL Mobility Service has gained traction in numerous sectors including cultural facilities, hotels, and popular tourist areas. Notable past implementations include the Tokyo International Forum, which was held under the banner of “Connecting through Culture.” WHILL Corporation is committed to promoting accessibility and inclusivity in transportation, collaborating with stakeholders across different sectors to ensure that everyone can enjoy art and culture in a seamless and secure manner.
