Domsjö Fabriker and Adven Partner for a Greener Future

In an effort to bolster Sweden's supply of liquefied biogas (LBG), Domsjö Fabriker is set to advance its operations at the High Coast Innovation Park located in Örnsköldsvik. The company has submitted an application for a subsidy from Sweden's national climate investment platform, Klimatklivet, to facilitate the upgrading of biogas produced from industrial processes into liquefied form, which can effectively substitute fossil diesel in the heavy transportation sector. The initiative aims for a plant launch by the end of 2028.

Björn Vedin, the CEO of Domsjö Fabriker, expresses optimism about this venture, stating that it is an essential step towards utilizing side streams and energy flows within the local industrial community. The biogas derived from their operations, alongside contributions from other park participants in the future, will be refined into LBG. Upon reaching full capacity, this facility is projected to replace approximately 100 GWh of fossil diesel annually, which is equivalent to a substantial reduction of 26,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere each year.

As Sweden currently relies heavily on imported energy, local production of liquefied biogas is anticipated to enhance regional self-sufficiency and reinforce the security of fuel supplies, delivering better access to renewable fuels. This transition towards LBG is particularly crucial for heavy transport modes, like trucking and maritime shipping, where moving away from diesel is considerably more challenging than for light passenger vehicles.

Domsjö Fabriker is collaborating with Adven, a firm specializing in energy, water, and side-stream valorization infrastructure. Adven has been involved in the project's design and development phase. Jonas Sjölander, Group CEO of Adven, remarks on the partnership, emphasizing the historical significance of Domsjö Fabriker and its commitment to adapting to new sustainability demands. Together, they aim to create circular and resource-efficient solutions that not only benefit their operations but also contribute positively to Sweden's overall industrial landscape.

This investment in the climate is particularly timely, especially given the ongoing discussions around energy security and the shift towards cleaner transportation options. Lena Ek, a Board Member at Adven and a former Swedish Minister for the Environment, highlighted the resilience aspect of this project. It strengthens Sweden’s infrastructure against potential fuel supply disruptions and serves as a vital alternative to electrical solutions — especially crucial for heavy-duty vehicles that support essential public services like fire, medical, and police operations.

For the envisaged plant to become operational by Q4 of 2028, an efficient and streamlined permitting process is essential. Both Domsjö Fabriker and Adven are committed to advancing this initiative, contingent upon receiving the state climate investment funds and obtaining the requisite environmental and construction permits. Vedin adds, "This is a promising project perfectly aligned with our goal to maximize climate impact for every kronor invested. We’ll need effective collaboration with local government bodies to ensure a timely delivery of the project, meeting our ambitious schedule."

A Commitment to Sustainability

Domsjö Fabriker prides itself on its capacity to refine renewable raw materials from the forest into sustainable products, including specialty cellulose, lignin, and bioethanol—ingredients integral to various applications such as pharmaceuticals, biodegradable packaging, and textiles. Their production adheres to high ethical and environmental standards, emphasizing a completely closed-loop system in their bleaching processes, which avoids chlorine use entirely.
