Tranter Selected as Supplier for the Net Zero Teesside Power Project
In a significant step towards a greener future, Tranter International AB has been awarded a contract to supply gasketed plate and frame heat exchangers for the groundbreaking Net Zero Teesside Power project (NZT Power) in the UK. This initiative is set to be a pioneering venture as it aims to establish the world’s first gas-fired power plant integrating carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
Power Generation and Environmental Impact
The NZT Power facility is designed to generate over 740 megawatts of flexible and low-carbon power, which is expected to meet the electricity needs of over one million homes in the UK annually. A crucial aspect of this project is its commitment to capturing up to two million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. This captured CO2 will be securely transported and stored via the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) infrastructure, which also supports a network of carbon capture projects spanning across Teesside and the Humber region, collectively known as the East Coast Cluster.
Contract Specifications
Under this contract, Tranter will deliver 40 large plate and frame heat exchangers utilizing stainless steel, along with a selection of gaskets made from either Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) or Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR). This order has been placed by Technip Energies, which is leading a consortium featuring GE Vernova and the construction partner Balfour Beatty, tasked with executing the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for both the NZT Power project and the NEP's onshore power and carbon capture components.
The site of this installation is conveniently located just an hour away from Tranter's Operations Service center in Wakefield, thereby ensuring optimized support and maintenance for the plant throughout its operational lifespan. Not only does this project promise environmental benefits, but it is also anticipated to foster long-term economic development in the region for many years to come.
Tranter's Expertise
Tranter has been a frontrunner in the carbon capture sector, having begun its development of plate and frame heat exchangers for post-combustion carbon capture pilot plants back in 2010-2011. This extensive experience has equipped them with valuable insights into the application, design, and operation of carbon capture technologies. As the advancements in carbon capture become more commercialized, Tranter's reputation as a knowledgeable partner for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) companies is steadfast.
Thomas Cassirer, Vice President of Segments Marketing at Tranter, expressed enthusiasm regarding their involvement in this monumental de-carbonization project. He explained that Tranter’s heat exchangers would play a pivotal role in the carbon capture process, using their ThermoFit® plates (GT-series) and Omniflex plate patterns to deliver optimal performance, especially under high temperature difference conditions (NTUs), without incurring excessive pressure drops. This efficiency is especially vital for post-combustion carbon capture applications that utilize regenerable solvents.
Future of Carbon Capture
As the global demand for low-carbon solutions continues to rise, the importance of adapting to technological advancements remains crucial for providers. Tranter has proven itself over the past decade as a reliable technology provider for carbon capture applications. With more projects being scaled to megawatt power outputs, Tranter is determined to maintain its position as a go-to resource and solution provider in the carbon capture arena.
