July Blood Donation Campaign Month

In Tokyo, from July 1st to July 31st, we observe the “Love Blood Donation Movement.” Blood cannot be artificially produced and doesn’t have a long shelf life, which makes blood donations from volunteers vital for those needing medical treatment due to illness or injury. The campaign shines a light on the decreasing participation among donors aged between 10 to 20 years, making it crucial to encourage young individuals to step up and contribute.

Campaign Details

1. Promotional Campaign Posters
Posters supporting the blood donation campaign will be displayed throughout municipalities and schools, as well as on all Tokyo Metro train ads. These posters can also be viewed on the Tokyo Metropolitan Health Bureau’s website.

2. Corporate Collaboration
Nine companies that partner with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government are also involved in promoting blood donation within their organizations. These businesses will display campaign posters, distribute brochures, and send internal communications to urge their employees to participate. Some companies will even feature the campaign on their websites.

3. Recognition of Donors
The campaign will recognize individuals and organizations that have actively supported blood donation efforts through awards from the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Tokyo Governor. This initiative will celebrate those who have made significant contributions to the blood donation movement over the years.

4. Blood Donation at the Metropolitan Government Building
Blood donation will also take place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building from July 28th to July 31st, specifically in the Second Main Hall on the first floor. Individuals weighing over 50 kg can donate 400 ml of blood, with the entire process taking about 40 minutes.

How to Participate in Blood Donation

• - Donations can be made at 12 permanent blood donation rooms and via donation buses throughout the city.
• - It is encouraged to make a reservation in advance. This can be done through the “Love Blood” web service (available as an app) or by contacting individual donation rooms directly. For more details, please check the Tokyo Red Cross Blood Center’s website.
• - To ensure consistent supply of blood products, it is crucial that donations are made evenly throughout the year. Participation tends to be lower on weekdays compared to weekends, so individuals who can make donations during the week are especially encouraged to do so.
