Republic Services Announces Construction of Innovative Recycling Center in St. Louis Area

Republic Services to Build a New Recycling Center

Republic Services, Inc., a top player in the environmental services sector, has shared exciting news about their plans to open a new state-of-the-art recycling center in Bridgeton, Missouri, aimed at serving the Greater St. Louis area. This initiative highlights the company's commitment to sustainability and circular economy practices, reinforcing its role in enhancing recycling efforts in the region.

Facility Details

Set to cover an impressive 105,000 square feet, this innovative facility is anticipated to commence operations by mid-2027. It is designed to cater to a population of about 3 million residents from the Greater St. Louis area and surrounding communities. With a capacity to process up to 45 tons of single-stream recyclables per hour, including various materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass containers, the new center aims to facilitate a significant increase in local recycling rates.

Area President Andrew Wempe emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “Our investment in this new recycling center reinforces Republic Services' commitment to circularity, sustainability, and the St. Louis community. It will meet growing demand for recycling throughout Greater St. Louis and help our customers achieve their sustainability goals.” This robust infrastructure is expected to make a sizeable impact on recycling efficiency in the region.

Cutting-Edge Technology

The Bridgeton center will incorporate advanced recycling technologies such as optical sorters equipped with digital recognition capabilities that can identify and separate materials within milliseconds. Additionally, the facility will employ sophisticated screening technology to classify recyclables by size while effectively removing non-recyclable substances from the input stream. Notably, an artificial intelligence (AI) system will be implemented to minimize contamination, ensuring that the recycling processes are as efficient as possible. This AI technology will also provide real-time data analytics to enhance the sorting process, maximizing the volume of materials successfully recycled.

Economic and Community Impact

Beyond improving recycling capabilities, the construction of the facility will also generate significant economic benefits for the local community. Projected job creation includes up to 200 full-time positions during the construction phase and around 60 permanent jobs once the facility is operational. This influx of job opportunities is expected to contribute positively to the local economy, further enhancing Republic Services' commitment to community support.

Republic Services currently has a robust footprint in the Greater St. Louis region, with nearly 1,000 employees and operation of 12 different facilities, including hauling locations, transfer stations, recycling centers, and disposal sites. Their ongoing commitment to the community is reflected not only in these operational efforts but also through various volunteer initiatives. Over the past seven years, Republic Services and the Republic Services Charitable Foundation have positively impacted over 360,000 individuals in the St. Louis area and 650,000 throughout Missouri through charitable support.

Commitment to Sustainability

As one of the largest recyclers in the United States, with the capability to process an astounding 5 million tons of recyclable materials each year across 75 facilities nationwide, Republic Services is well-equipped to address the growing recycling needs of communities. The company's strategic investments and advancements in technology are essential steps toward creating a more sustainable future.

The groundbreaking for the new recycling center, which is contingent upon the successful completion of the permitting process, is expected to kick off in the first quarter of 2026. Given its prominent focus on innovation and community engagement, this project represents a significant forward step not only for Republic Services but also for environmental sustainability in the St. Louis area.
