A Launchpad for Cures



According to Dr. Tina Cheng, the director of the Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation, this center is designed to transition promising scientific research into real-world treatments. Located in Sharonville, Ohio, the new center is four times larger than the previous facility based in Avondale, Cincinnati. This expansion empowers Cincinnati Children's, which is recognized as the top pediatric cancer care center in the nation, to enhance its research and development processes. The new facility transforms the therapeutic landscape, allowing for the production of custom treatments tailored to correct faulty genes or boost immune responses against treatment-resistant diseases.

Each year, over 300,000 children globally receive a cancer diagnosis, while approximately 8 million are born with genetic defects. Cincinnati Children's, with its dedicated workforce of around 19,600, is continuously at the forefront of researching potential cures for these pressing health challenges. What sets the Applied Gene and Cell Therapy Center apart is its dual function as both a research and manufacturing facility. As highlighted by Dr. Chaozhong “Charles” Zou, the executive director, this structure closely integrates clinical perspectives into its operations. This connection enables quicker transitions from laboratory discoveries to valuable therapies available to patients. The center will initially focus on diseases such as telomere biology disorder, which lead to premature aging and cancers, and sickle cell disease, known for its severe pain and serious complications.

The facility is designed with meticulous attention to detail, with air filtration and environmental controls that exceed typical hospital standards. This leadership in quality manufacturing assures that patients involved in clinical trials receive therapeutics produced with uniform safety and effectiveness. Subsequently, the new center will undergo a certification process expected to last around a year; therapy production is anticipated to commence by early 2027.

Commitment to Expansion and Excellence



Cincinnati Children's has allocated $60 million for the new center, which occupies a 14.6-acre site previously housing an auto parts distribution facility. About 50,000 square feet has been customized for the center’s multifaceted functions. An estimated 100 employees will now work at this new location, significantly enhancing research and production capabilities.

With robust support from industry-standard methodologies and high-level expertise, Cincinnati Children's Amplified Gene and Cell Therapy Center is poised to lead in innovative pediatric healthcare. The facility boasts 12 advanced clean rooms designed to prevent contamination during production and is regarded as one of the largest academic centers globally.
