Embracing the Handwritten Word in a Digital Age
In today's fast-paced digital landscape, where TEXT MESSAGES and social media reign supreme, a surprising trend is emerging: younger generations are gravitating towards handwritten notes. A recent study conducted by 3M Japan highlights the enduring appeal of Post-it® Notes among young people, showcasing their unique value in fostering genuine human connections.
The Event and Its Significance
Celebrating a remarkable 45 years since the launch of Post-it® Products in Japan, 3M Japan is bringing a unique event to the heart of Shibuya: the
“Words Matter Coffee Stand by Post-it® Brand.” This event, set to take place from July 2 to July 4, 2026, at the Shibuya Hikarie, invites visitors to exchange messages written on Post-it® Notes for complimentary coffee. Here, words come to life, and the essence of personal connection is rekindled.
The Study's Insights
A survey targeting individuals aged 15 to 64 revealed fascinating insights:
- - Over 80% of respondents with experience using Post-it® Notes reported that they still utilize them.
- - About 70% of teenagers, even in the digital era, vouched for their continued use of sticky notes, indicating that this traditional medium still holds relevance.
Handwritten Notes vs. Digital Communication
Despite the overwhelming convenience of texting and DMs, our survey showed a significant shift in communication preferences. Notably, teenagers are twice as likely as those in their 50s to use sticky notes to express thoughts to friends. This trend indicates a yearning for authentic connections in an increasingly impersonal digital communication landscape.
Expanding Uses
The popularity of sticky notes has expanded beyond mere reminders:
- - Younger demographics utilize them for encouragement, gratitude, and messages of support, all of which cultivate closer relationships.
- - Interestingly, nearly 1 in 100 respondents noted that sticky notes contributed to significant milestones in their lives, such as getting engaged or married, indicating a deeper, emotional significance behind these simple notes.
A Reaffirmation of Connection
In a time dominated by digital distractions, the appeal of handwritten notes lies in their simplicity and personal touch. Many participants expressed that writing messages by hand allows for warmer, heartfelt interactions. For instance, 4 out of 10 young users believe that handwritten messages facilitate smoother communication and show more sincerity compared to digital messages.
Young Users Find Joy in Handwriting
Our research further indicated that approximately
60% of young individuals have received messages from sticky notes. Among them,
over 70% expressed delight in receiving such notes. The joy that young people derive from these small tokens of thoughtfulness highlights the emotional impact of handwritten communication.
Building Future Connections
The upcoming coffee stand event aims to redefine how the Post-it® Brand fits into the modern communication landscape. Participants will write heartfelt messages to their loved ones, which they can then exchange for coffee, creating a chain of kindness and appreciation in a casual setting.
