Discover the Vibrant FIND LOCAL MARKET at Trainchi Jiyugaoka
The fascinating FIND LOCAL MARKET is making its return at the Trainchi Jiyugaoka in Setagaya and Meguro districts of Tokyo on October 11-12. This exciting community co-creation event will gather about 40 unique stores and businesses from the Jiyugaoka area, bringing together local charm in an open market setting.
An Invitation to Connect with Local Culture
Conceptualized around the theme of “A Market Connected by Relationships,” this event aims to create connections between locally unique stores and the residents and visitors of the area. This is more than just a shopping event; it’s an opportunity to engage in conversations with creators, discover shops that you may have never visited before, and uncover new attractions in the vibrant Jiyugaoka district.
This sixth edition of the FIND LOCAL MARKET will focus on one of Jiyugaoka’s signature attractions: sweets. For the first time, a special sweets area will be featured, with approximately eight patisseries and cafes highlighted each day, showcasing seasonal ingredients and artisanal methods. Notable appearances include L’art OKUSAWA, a patisserie known for its exquisite crepes run by Chef Tsuchiya, who honed his skills over a decade in renowned Parisian and Japanese establishments.
Besides the sweets area, visitors can explore a diverse array of shops offering vintage clothes, handmade goods, edibles, and more - around 40 stores in total. Attendees can wander through the quaint alleys of Jiyugaoka, forming connections with unique products and sentiments from the creators.
Sweets Galore: A Taste of Jiyugaoka
The sweets area is certainly not to be missed! Featuring beloved local spots, roughly eight shops will participate each day, including first-time participants like TONE, Takeya Yogashi Hofu, and OYATSUYA SUN. Jiyugaoka’s sweets culture will be on full display, allowing visitors to taste the special delicacies that represent the area.
Some of the featured sellers include:
- - L’art OKUSAWA: Renowned for its artful pastries crafted by Chef Tsuchiya, who combines the French baking techniques with his unique creative flair.
- - TONE (First Appearance): A charming café emphasizing wholesome flavor through handmade baked goods, promoting natural ingredients.
- - Takeya Yogashi Hofu (First Appearance): A patisserie rooted in traditional French craftsmanship, showcasing innovative flavors inspired by Japanese culinary traditions.
- - OYATSUYA SUN (First Appearance): A delightful bakery that emphasizes the joy of snacking with seasonal ingredients and a warmth that enhances daily life.
Engaging Events and Special Offerings
Additionally, the event will feature a special caricature drawing session by the talented illustrator Kate Matsufuji, who is also the creator of the event’s visual branding. This engaging activity will take place on October 12, allowing visitors to capture a unique memory of their experience at the market. The event operates from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day, and early registration is recommended due to limited slots.
In addition to sweets, guests will find various other market offerings that embody the spirit of Jiyugaoka. Whether you’re looking for seasonal gourmets such as autumn-themed treats like Mont Blanc doughnuts, apple pies filled with Shinshu apples, or savory dishes like the exquisite black chicken and chestnut clay pot rice, there’s something for everyone. Local businesses such as ethical food shops and vintage boutiques will also offer their unique products, enriching the market’s diversity.
