Synology Launches the DP5200: A Compact Data Protection Solution
On July 9, 2026, Synology debuted the DP5200, a cutting-edge data protection appliance designed to cater to the needs of growing organizations and remote offices. The latest addition to the ActiveProtect line, this compact 1U appliance aims to provide extensive platform compatibility, large-scale workload management, and robust protection features powered by AI.
According to Jia-Yu Liu, Executive Vice President of Synology’s Data Protection Group, "Today's businesses struggle to find data protection strategies that can be scaled to meet their needs without increasing costs and complexity." He emphasized that the DP5200 is engineered as a space-saving integrated solution that delivers maximum value when deployed across multiple branches, remote sites, and data centers.
Key Features of the DP5200
The DP5200 stands out with its compact 1U form factor, offering up to an impressive 36TB of usable capacity along with every enterprise-level backup feature found in the ActiveProtect Manager (APM). Its extensive range of functionalities includes:
1. Wide Platform Support
The DP5200 is engineered to protect an array of environments, including:
- - Virtualization Platforms: Compatibility with VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.
- - Physical Infrastructure: Support for Windows and Linux servers, along with Windows PCs and macOS.
- - SaaS Applications: Backup solutions for Microsoft 365.
- - Databases: Comprehensive protection for Oracle and Microsoft SQL.
- - File Servers: Enhanced support for SMB, NetApp, and Nutanix systems.
Upcoming APM 2.0 upgrades are set to extend this compatibility even further, enabling protection for Azure VMs, Amazon EC2, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, and Google Workspace among others.
2. Unified Management for Large Scale Environments
The DP5200 is capable of functioning as a standalone backup server, safeguarding all workloads within a local site. It can also operate as a central management server, integrating up to 120,000 workloads while managing 1,000 servers across multiple locations. This makes it an ideal solution for large organizations with diverse IT infrastructures.
3. AI-Powered Active Defense
Enhancing security, the DP5200 combines multi-factor authentication (MFA) access control with an AI-boosted architecture. It establishes a 3-2-1-1-0 protection strategy through techniques such as immutable WORM storage, logical air gaps, and version-based tiering. The upcoming APM 2.0 will transition the system from passive recovery to active defense. By employing AI and machine learning, it will detect anomalies during backups and scan for malware, guaranteeing that all future restorations remain free from threats.
The DP5200 will be available globally through Synology's network of resellers and partners. For more details, interested parties can visit
