PTC Unveils its Model-Based Definition Capabilities
At the recent Paris Air Show, PTC (NASDAQ: PTC) made headlines with the announcement of its new model-based definition (MBD) tools integrated within its Onshape computer-aided design (CAD) and product data management (PDM) platform. This development marks a significant milestone as it introduces the industry's first fully digital definition capabilities within a cloud-native environment.
The new MBD tools in Onshape enable engineering teams to generate a comprehensive digital representation of a product. This means that all essential product manufacturing information (PMI)—such as dimensions, tolerances, annotations, surface finishes, and material specifications—can now be embedded directly into the 3D CAD model. By shifting from traditional 2D drawings to this advanced methodology, PTC aims to streamline the communication and collaboration among engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing teams.
“Despite the renowned adoption of 3D CAD technologies, many manufacturing teams still rely heavily on 2D drawings to convey critical product details,” remarked David Katzman, General Manager of Onshape and Arena at PTC. “This often leads to misunderstandings and operational delays. Our new MBD tools, which enable the embedding of PMI directly into the 3D models, effectively address this issue. Teams can now work more efficiently, with greater clarity and fewer errors, while maintaining a totally digital workflow.”
The cloud-native architecture of Onshape promises instant accessibility of this information across all devices and locations. This transformative approach is anticipated to reshape how teams communicate and accelerate product development cycles significantly.
Additionally, PTC aims to demonstrate these MBD capabilities in collaboration with Aura Aero, a pioneer in sustainable aviation. Aura Aero will showcase the new tools at their display during the Paris Air Show from June 16-19, 2025. Marc Germain, Chief Digital Officer at Aura Aero, expressed excitement about these developments, stating, “PTC's cloud-native tools are fulfilling the original promise of MBD—integrating clear and accessible manufacturing intentions directly within the 3D models. This leap in technology is revolutionizing our design processes and fast-tracking our journey from concept to production.”
The MBD functionality is currently available through a limited early visibility program and is expected to become generally available by late 2025. For potential users keen on leveraging these cutting-edge capabilities, PTC encourages exploring the rich features of Onshape and its commitment to enhancing the product design landscape.
In addition to the MBD tools, PTC will also highlight the latest version of its Creo CAD software, showcasing how the integration of intelligent AI solutions is set to transform the product lifecycle management spectrum.
