Boehringer Ingelheim and WHO Foundation Join Forces to Tackle Obesity Worldwide

A Global Initiative to Combat Obesity

In an important move to address one of the most pressing health issues worldwide, Boehringer Ingelheim and the WHO Foundation have announced a groundbreaking three-year collaboration aimed at accelerating the global response to obesity and its associated metabolic health challenges. This initiative, backed by a $5 million investment from Boehringer Ingelheim, will focus on improving health systems in resource-limited settings, where the burden of obesity is particularly severe.

Obesity is a significant global health challenge facing many countries today. According to recent statistics, over 2.5 billion adults and more than 390 million children are currently classified as overweight. Alarmingly, one in eight individuals globally suffers from obesity—a figure that has doubled among adults since 1990. The rising prevalence of obesity poses substantial risks for related conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney disorders, and liver problems. This collaboration seeks to tackle these interconnected health issues through an integrated care approach.

Objectives of the Collaboration

The focus of this partnership is to fortify health system preparedness and ensure that healthcare providers are equipped to monitor and provide effective care for patients dealing with obesity and related metabolic health conditions. By fostering synergies between health and non-health sectors, the program aims to incorporate the voices of individuals living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) into policy discussions, emphasizing patient-centered care as a core component of health strategies.

He noted, "The scale and complexity of the obesity and metabolic health challenge calls for an integrated approach that will strengthen the foundations of care. Through this collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim, we will enable countries to translate evidence and global guidance into integrated services that respond to people's needs."

Supporting WHO's Acceleration Plan

This collaboration supports the World Health Organization's Acceleration Plan to Stop Obesity, which was adopted by member states in 2022. The plan emphasizes the importance of transitioning from commitment to action, focusing on evidence-based interventions, national ownership, and transformative systemic change.

Boehringer Ingelheim's Board Member, Shashank Deshpande, articulated the need for coordinated efforts to tackle obesity and related conditions, saying, "Obesity and related metabolic diseases cannot be addressed effectively in isolation. They require health systems that recognize their shared drivers and provide coordinated, long-term care. Getting this right represents an opportunity for governments, health systems, and society."

Building on Previous Success

This new collaboration builds on the prior partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim and the WHO Foundation, which focused on enhancing suicide prevention systems across the Americas. By integrating obesity care with the prevention and management of related diseases, this initiative aims to create a comprehensive approach to health that promotes resilience and ensures equitable access to chronic care within primary healthcare systems.
