Empowering Women in the Pacific: A New Cybersecurity Initiative by Cambridge Global Advisors

In a significant move to strengthen cybersecurity in the Pacific region, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has teamed up with Cambridge Global Advisors (CGA) to roll out an initiative named the Pacific Women in Cyber (PWiC). This collaboration aims to bolster the digital skills and cybersecurity awareness among women and girls in countries including Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa.

The Program Focus

Funded under DFAT's Southeast Asia and Pacific Cyber Program, the PWiC initiative will span over 18 months and includes targeted internships and training programs designed to enhance the cybersecurity workforce. This initiative seeks not just to increase the number of women pursuing careers in the tech industry, but also aims to enrich the skill set of the existing workforce throughout the Pacific.

Jessica Hunter, Australia’s Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology, asserts that this program is pivotal in creating an inclusive and resilient cybersecurity landscape. Hunter emphasizes the importance of providing women and girls with essential digital skills, which creates opportunities for them to step into the cyber industries that are increasingly crucial today.

In addition to enhancing individual prospects, the initiative aims to build partnerships and networks within the cybersecurity field. Through mentorship opportunities, women participating in the program will gain insights and guidance from seasoned professionals, thus facilitating their growth in an evolving job market.

Building Lasting Partnerships

Douglas Lute, Chairman of CGA, expressed enthusiasm regarding the program. He stated, “The PWiC initiative lays the groundwork for lasting partnerships that will strengthen cybersecurity capacity across the Pacific well into the future.” This forward-thinking perspective highlights the broader scope of the initiative, which is not only to offer training but to encourage sustained collaboration and support among nations that are often underrepresented in the digital domain.

CGA's involvement is enhanced by their previous experience in conducting cybersecurity training events in several countries, including the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Papua New Guinea. With this previous foundation, CGA is well-positioned to tailor the PWiC initiative to meet the unique needs of each participating country, ensuring that stakeholders are actively involved in the learning and development process.

A Collaborative Approach

The implementation of PWiC will be done in close consultation with stakeholders from Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa.
