FM Breaks Ground on New Science and Technology Centre in Luxembourg
On March 17, 2025, FM, a leading commercial property insurance group, officially began construction of its FM Science and Technology Centre in Luxembourg. This state-of-the-art facility aims to centralize research, innovation, and client engagement within Europe. The establishment of this centre is pivotal for enhancing access to FM's engineering expertise and fostering scientific risk mitigation practices for clients across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).
The project underscores FM's commitment to the EMEA region and reflects its mission of risk mitigation while building partnerships that protect businesses from losses. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the FM Science and Technology Centre will serve as a vital hub for scientific exploration and industry collaboration, bringing innovative solutions closer to clients.
Luxembourg has been chosen for this project due to its strategic geographical position and existing presence where FM has established its European headquarters since 2017. The centre will conduct advanced research focused on significant topics including climate hazards, technology in industry, and solutions to prevent cyber-related risks.
Notably, the Science and Technology Centre will cater to FM's clients, offering them a collaborative environment equipped with experiential laboratories to facilitate learning and training. With the advancement of its engineering-driven approach to risk management and loss prevention through scientific inquiry, FM is poised to support client resilience in an increasingly complex risk landscape.
Chairman and CEO of FM, Malcolm Roberts, expressed that this centre marks a significant milestone in FM’s trajectory, providing enhanced support and resources for clients in EMEA: "Through our new facility, we aim to further enrich our existing research framework and extend our message of resilience."
Furthermore, the project illustrates FM's intent to weave local understanding into its global expansion strategy. With ongoing growth, adapting to local standards and integrating knowledge not only enriches FM's capabilities but also strengthens relationships with policyholders and local communities.
The Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Luc Frieden, also acknowledged the project’s impact, recognizing the importance of research and development for economic prosperity: "FM's Science and Technology Centre exemplifies Luxembourg's conducive ecosystem for data-driven innovation in Europe."
Building on its legacy, the FM Science and Technology Centre will augment FM's global network of resilience while leveraging scientific innovation to deepen the understanding of risk dynamics affecting clients and their communities. The centre is aligned with FM’s extensive research initiatives and educational programs, which aim to decipher and address evolving risks while simultaneously advancing the science behind loss prevention.
In addition to the Luxembourg facility, FM operates a variety of renowned research and training sites globally, which includes:
- - FM Research Campus in West Glocester, Rhode Island, USA, focused on preventing physical threats from escalating into disasters.
- - FM Science and Technology Centre in Singapore, which serves the Asia Pacific region with client-oriented risk management training.
- - FM Science and Technology Center in Norwood, Massachusetts, USA, facilitating innovative learning methods for both clients and employees with plans for further expansion in 2026.
FM's commitment to risk management is not new; established nearly two centuries ago, the organization stands as a pioneering mutual insurance group, dedicated solely to property risk management. Its capital, research capabilities, and engineering expertise provide crucial support for its policyholder-owners, who believe in the preventability of the majority of property losses. They collaborate with FM to enhance their business continuity strategies and make informed risk management decisions, thus merging property loss prevention with insurance protection.
As the completion of the FM Science and Technology Centre approaches, the industry can expect a new benchmark in risk mitigation and resilience strategies, attesting to FM's leadership in the evolution of property insurance and risk management.
