Introducing the Phone (3a) Community Edition by Nothing



Nothing, the London-based consumer technology brand, has officially announced the launch of the Phone (3a) Community Edition. This innovative project showcases the creativity of talented community members who collaborated with the Nothing team to design a product that will hit the market.

The Community Edition encompasses a range of elements from product design and packaging to accessories, wallpapers and lock screens, as well as marketing campaigns. This initiative builds on the success of the Phone (2a) Community Edition, which was recognized with the prestigious iF Design Award Gold in 2024.

Over the past year, the Community Edition project attracted over 700 submissions from aspiring creators eager to collaborate with Nothing. Four outstanding participants were chosen for their creativity, technical skills, and ability to elevate Nothing's design ethos: Emre Kayganacl (hardware design), Ambrogio Tacconi and Louis Aymonod (accessories), Jad Zock (lock screen clock and wallpaper design), and Sushruta Sarkar (marketing campaign).

These emerging talents, recognized in their respective fields, were given a platform to further develop their skills, collaborating with Nothing’s design, software, marketing, and creative teams in London to turn their concepts into tangible products. "Great ideas can come from anywhere," Nothing believes, and the co-creation process fosters a new relationship between the brand and its community.

This year, the extended timeframe for co-creation aimed at enhancing design quality. All awardees were announced simultaneously, marking the end of a nine-month collaborative effort between Nothing and the creators.

Community-Centric Approach



Beyond merely co-creating products through the Community Edition project, Nothing is also establishing a larger model that allows the community to play a significant role in shaping company policies. For instance, a community member representative participates in the company’s board meetings, marking a commitment to building the future of Nothing in partnership with its community.

Last week, the company announced a new community investment round valued at $1.3 billion (approximately ¥195 billion, based on an exchange rate of $1 = ¥150), with a total of $5 million (around ¥750 million) slated for investment. Building on a solid hardware foundation, Nothing aims to collaboratively create a next-generation AI-native platform with everyone who utilizes it.

The community investment round, set to launch on December 11 via Wefunder and Crowdcube, will allow early access registrants to start investing 24 hours earlier, on December 10.

Product Overview


Hardware and Packaging Design



The design for the Phone (3a) was conceived by Emre Kayganacl, inspired by the tech aesthetics of the late 90s. Vibrant and fun, the unique transparency characteristic of Nothing's products is intact. This special edition looks as if it has emerged from a tech magazine circa 1999. The matte finish with vibrant colors marks the first of its kind for Nothing smartphones, a nod to nostalgic gaming devices that once captivated childhood imagination. The design also extends to the packaging graphics, echoing the accent colors of the device. Without Emre’s unconventional approach, this packaging might never have existed.

Accessories



Ambrogio Tacconi and Louis Aymonod (Reveland) developed playful dice as accessories, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures spanning over 5,000 years. The numbers on the surface, illustrated in Ndot55 font, add a touch of Nothing’s charm to time-honored games. Each Phone (3a) Community Edition comes bundled with this unique set of dice. While it might seem easy to create dice, Tacconi and Aymonod ensured every detail was meticulously crafted, refusing to settle until they found the perfect partners to express every dot and detail flawlessly.

Lock Screen Clock and Wallpaper Design



The retro theme extends into software design, with Jad Zock’s concept evoking the thrill of nostalgic technology. The clock face design isn't cluttered, ensuring users can check the time without distraction. The wallpaper collection adds charm to the Community Edition, reminiscent of when technology brightened our daily lives. It embodies the excitement for the next groundbreaking technology that everyone eagerly anticipated.

Marketing Campaign



Sushruta Sarkar’s marketing campaign, dubbed ‘Made Together', draws inspiration from 90s PC graphics, spotlighting the device design and project team. This perfectly aligns with the retro vibe of the Community Edition. Sarkar presented ideas that captured the impression of nostalgic design tools. Minor adjustments helped integrate these ideas with Nothing's aesthetic, collaborating closely with one of Nothing’s art directors to refine the overall look and feel.

Sales Information and Pricing



  • - The Phone (3a) Community Edition will be available worldwide, limited to 1,000 units.
  • - Only the 12 + 256GB model will be offered at ¥59,800 (including tax).
  • - Purchase requires a registration for the 'Purchase Interest' starting today until December 12 at 7 PM JST at nothing.tech. Registered individuals will receive an email for purchase at 10 PM JST on December 12.
