Su Zhigang's Induction in the IAAPA Hall of Fame
On November 17, 2025, a significant event occurred at the IAAPA Legends: A Hall of Fame Celebratory Affair in Orlando, Florida. Su Zhigang, the president of Chimelong Group, was officially inducted into the IAAPA Hall of Fame, marking a milestone as the first Chinese ever to receive this honor. This accolade is a testament to his leadership and the rising global influence of the Chimelong brand within the realms of culture and tourism in China.
Established in 1918, the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) is the largest international trade association for the amusement park and attractions industry, boasting over 7,500 members across more than 100 countries. The Hall of Fame, inaugurated in 1990, recognizes individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the industry. Su’s induction reflects rigorous criteria that include innovation, operational excellence, and sustainable development.
In commenting on this achievement, Jakob Wahl, president and CEO of IAAPA, emphasized, “Su Zhigang's extraordinary strategic vision has redefined the landscape of the attractions industry in Asia, with an influence that resonates globally. His commitment to ecological conservation, cultural preservation, and the integration of tourism and entertainment serves as an exemplary model for the industry.” Notably, Su Zhigang stands out as the sole Chinese among only eight individuals globally who have received both the Buzz Price Thea Award and induction into the IAAPA Hall of Fame.
During his acceptance speech, Su expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his country and the opportunities presented by China's reform and opening policies. He recounted his humble beginnings as a farmer, showcasing how entrepreneurship has allowed him to pursue his dreams step by step. Remarkably, he stated, “Wherever I am, I always consider myself a beginner, someone who must continue learning and striving. This induction into the IAAPA Hall of Fame is not just an honor; it marks a new starting point.”
He further asserted his commitment to strengthening collaborations with international partners, actively adopting advanced technologies and management practices, and advancing China's cultural tourism industry to higher developmental levels.
Su Zhigang, born into an agrarian family in Guangdong, initiated his business journey with a restaurant in 1989 and went on to establish China's first private safari park in 1997. Over the past 36 years, he has led Chimelong, focusing on cultural tourism. His continual innovation and exceptional creativity have culminated in the successful establishment of three world-class tourist destinations: Chimelong Guangzhou Resort, Chimelong Hengqin Resort, and Chimelong Qingyuan Resort.
Today, the various attractions managed by Chimelong shine on the global stage, holding 17 Guinness World Records and garnering multiple accolades from both TEA (Themed Entertainment Association) and IAAPA. These milestones highlight the ascent of Chinese-origin cultural tourism brands. Chimelong welcomes millions of global visitors annually, becoming a vibrant symbol of China's growing capabilities and potential in the global tourism sector.
Looking to the future, Su affirmed Chimelong's commitment to driving innovation, exploring new business models, and integrating cutting-edge technologies to create more unique and globally cherished theme parks. This forward-thinking approach not only reflects his personal vision but also represents a broader commitment to elevate China's cultural tourism footprint on the world stage.
