VIAVI Solutions Unveils a Compact GNSS-Disciplined Oscillator for Precision Timing Applications

In a groundbreaking move for the field of precision timing technology, VIAVI Solutions Inc. has revealed its latest innovation, the µPNT GDO-1000. This cutting-edge GNSS-disciplined oscillator is specifically designed to meet the demands of environments with strict limitations on size, weight, and power, making it a game-changer for various applications.

Measuring only 22mm x 42mm—approximately the size of a postage stamp—and weighing less than 4 grams, the GDO-1000 integrates seamlessly into platforms requiring precise timing solutions where traditional modules may be inadequate. With an increasing emphasis on compact design and efficiency in sectors such as defense, airborne systems, unmanned vehicles, and data centers, this new oscillator promises to deliver performance without compromising on necessary space or power consumption.

The GDO-1000 features dual-frequency L1/L5 GNSS reception, enabling microsecond-class holdover for up to 24 hours, which is crucial for applications operating under compromised conditions. Modern military and defense strategies necessitate resilient timing solutions, especially as payload constraints continue to challenge the capabilities of unmanned systems and critical infrastructure projects. The oscillator addresses these challenges head-on by providing a reliable timing source that allows for enhanced operational effectiveness in real-world situations.

One of the primary advantages of the GDO-1000 is its integration into existing systems. It utilizes an M.2 B-key form factor, allowing it to be installed in standard computing platforms and embedded systems without requiring customized mechanical modifications. This ease of integration means that organizations can save on both time and costs during implementation, all while enjoying an impressive power draw of approximately half a watt.

Further enhancing its capabilities, the GDO-1000 houses patented algorithms developed by the Jackson Labs team—recently acquired by VIAVI. These artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms predict and compensate for variability in oscillator behavior under diverse environmental conditions, ensuring reliable performance in a variety of settings, no matter the external influences such as temperature fluctuations, vibration, or shock.

Users can also benefit from its flexibility, as the oscillator accepts external 1PPS (pulses per second) inputs. This allows it to maintain discipline through M-Code GPS or alternative navigation sources, adding another layer of adaptability to the solution. Additionally, multiple 1PPS and low-phase-noise 10MHz coaxial inputs and outputs facilitate extensive system integration options despite its compact design.

Doug Russell, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Aerospace and Defense at VIAVI, stated, "Until now, customers needing reliable timing in compact systems have had to choose between two suboptimal options. Chip-scale atomic clocks are costly and often in short supply while full-size OCXO-based timing solutions tend to be too bulky and power-hungry. The GDO-1000 presents an innovative pathway forward so customers do not need to compromise anymore. Its performance approaches that of atomic-class clocks, contained within a module that fits neatly into standard M.2 slots and with a minimal power requirement."

For those interested in seeing this pioneering technology firsthand, the GDO-1000 will be showcased at Booth 407 during the 2026 Joint Navigation Conference, held from June 1 to June 4 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. In conjunction with the event, VIAVI's Lisa Perdue and Nino De Falcis will present a new cesium-less Enhanced Precision Time Reference Clock (ePRTC) solution tailored for supporting critical infrastructure.

As the demand for sophisticated positioning, navigation, and timing solutions continues to escalate in an increasingly interconnected world, VIAVI's µPNT GDO-1000 stands at the forefront of innovation. Its robust performance, compact size, and low-power operation ensure that it is poised to meet the requirements of both military and civilian applications
