Exploring the Unique Craft of Nishijin Weaving: 'Hyran' Tapestry Showcase at EXPO2025

The Unique Art of Nishijin Weaving: A New Tapestry at EXPO2025

In a fascinating blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art, Okamoto Orimono Co., Ltd., based in Kyoto's Nishijin region, is proud to present a new tapestry titled Hyran. This exquisite piece, measuring approximately 250 cm by 140 cm, is crafted using the rare Nishijin weaving technique known as Hiki-Haku. Collaborating with a group of young manga creators called Guranyuto, this innovative work is set to be showcased at major upcoming events: the Osaka Kansai Expo in 2025 and the Tokyo Textile Scope.

Hyran transcends simple textile design, weaving together manga elements such as paneling, negative space, and the passage of time into its very fabric. The tapestry features a multi-layered structure composed of silk and leafing, quietly narrating fragments of stories, inviting viewers into its poetic realm.

The Collaborative Spirit of Guranyuto

Guranyuto, a creative unit formed by teenage creators from Kyoto, bring their unique artistic perspective to this collaboration. Their narrative focuses on a tale of two individuals pursuing light within dreams, expressed through the enchanting medium of Nishijin textiles. Engaging with this traditional textile art form offers them an opportunity to explore new dimensions in their storytelling, showcasing how generational and technical collaborations can lead to creative innovation.

Okamoto Orimono continues to embrace traditional techniques, utilizing both hand weaving with shuttle looms and power looms in their production process. The Hiki-Haku technique, which involves adhering gold leaf to paper and then weaving the finely cut pieces into silk threads, creates a play of light and depth in the final textile. This technique is now a rare skill, held by only a handful of artisans.

Hyran serves as an exemplar of the potential to encapsulate the visions of artists and designers through the unique medium of Nishijin weaving. Okamoto Orimono also offers commissioned works, encouraging interested parties to explore the diverse expressions achievable through traditional techniques. Attendees at the exhibitions will witness the extensive craftsmanship that goes into creating each woven piece.
