APUS to Host Largest Commencement with Over 18,000 Graduates Celebrating Success
Celebrating Achievement: APUS Commencement Ceremony
On May 9 and 10, the American Public University System (APUS) will honor a remarkable milestone by celebrating over 18,000 graduates at one of its largest commencement ceremonies yet. This event marks a significant moment for those who have pursued their academic goals through APUS, which offers a variety of online degree and certificate programs via American Military University (AMU) and American Public University (APU).
A Grand Celebration
The commencement ceremonies will take place at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland, and are poised to recognize approximately 18,100 graduates from across all 50 states and several countries, with live streaming options available for those who cannot attend in person. This year's graduating class is exceptional, comprising 11 doctoral candidates, more than 4,600 master's degree recipients, 9,600 bachelor's degree achievers, and 3,900 associate degree holders.
The Class of 2025 is one of the largest ever, boasting a diverse group of graduates with varying backgrounds. For instance, the range of ages among the graduates highlights this diversity, with the oldest participant being 81 and the youngest just 17. In addition, almost 2,000 graduates are under the age of 25, while nearly 3% of the participants are 55 or older.
First-Generation and Military Representation
A noteworthy aspect of this graduation is that over 1,155 students are first-generation college graduates. Within the graduating class, there is a significant military presence; 66% are currently serving active-duty or are members of the National Guard, while more than 19% are veterans and 4% are military spouses or dependents. This demographic highlights APUS’s commitment to serving those in the armed forces and their families.
Inspirational Keynote Speakers
As part of the celebration, two graduating students will share their inspiring success stories, encouraging their peers to reflect on their journeys. Seth Casey, who earned a Bachelor's Degree in Management, expressed how shared experiences of stress and distractions reveal the common struggles faced by many. He emphasized the importance of perseverance in overcoming obstacles and building one's legacy.
Similarly, fellow graduate Kristina-Amy Jean-Mehu, recipient of a Master's Degree in Public Health, remarked on the resilience developed through navigating life's challenges while pursuing education. Both speakers will set a motivational tone for the festivities, reminding everyone of the strength demonstrated throughout their academic journeys.
Additionally, U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Lori E. Reynolds (retired) will deliver a keynote address, sharing insights gained from a distinguished 35-year military career and offering guidance on leadership and character. Her remarks underscore the significance of ethical conduct in both professional and personal realms.
APUS President Nuno Fernandes will also address graduates, emphasizing the unique nature of their achievements. He noted that the odds of being present at this graduation are close to zero, highlighting the success of each individual despite numerous challenges and stresses encountered during their academic paths.
Dr. Mary Papazian, a member of the APUS Board of Trustees, will further stress the essential value of education in today’s world. She will remind the graduates that their educational foundation equips them with the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the complexities of contemporary society, especially amidst misinformation and global challenges.
Honoring Excellence
This year's commencement will also feature awards to recognize outstanding students, faculty, and alumni who have contributed significantly to the university and its community. Among these honorees will be recipients of various prestigious awards, such as The Mary Kim Ward Resilience and Service Award and the 2025 Dr. Wallace E. Boston Leadership Award. These recognitions highlight not only academic achievement but the impact individuals have made in fostering the values of social justice and community service.
Conclusion
The upcoming commencement ceremony for APUS represents far more than just a graduation. It's a celebration of resilience, accomplishment, and the determination of individuals who have risen above challenges to earn their degrees. As they prepare to enter the next chapters of their lives—whether that includes pursuing further education, entering the workforce, or serving their communities—this moment will stand as a testament to their hard work and dedication. The university community looks forward to honoring these achievers and celebrating their contributions to the world around them.
