Under the leadership of hair diagnostic specialist Akiko Saito, the project tackles the often-ignored issues of hair damage caused by static electricity and friction, which are frequently dismissed as unavoidable winter nuisances. Many people tend to focus on damage due to coloring and heat from styling tools while overlooking the negative impacts of static electricity. This initiative sets out not only to make these effects visible but to educate society about the importance of tackling friction as a way to maintain hair health.

Through collaboration across various industries, the project will share insightful information and solutions addressing how to minimize static electricity, particularly in winter months or dry conditions when hair is most prone to damage.

Background of the Project


It may come as a surprise, but studies reveal that individuals engage in 'unconscious hair touching' multiple times a day. Research involving 36 participants aged 20 to 50 showed an average of 16.2 touches within 30 minutes, equating to roughly 518 times a day. This frequent contact is significant enough that, under controlled conditions, the level of friction generated is comparable to rubbing hair 520 times with a towel.

Moreover, the dry winter environment (at 20°C and 30% humidity) can produce approximately 0.65 microcoulombs of static electricity in hair, equivalent to the discharge felt when touching a doorknob in winter. Despite these findings, a significant percentage of people (over 70%) are unaware that their subconscious habits contribute substantially to hair damage.

Importance of Education


The Static Electricity Off Project emphasizes the need for increased awareness regarding everyday actions that have detrimental effects on hair health. The findings from a survey with 400 individuals showed that while many can identify factors that damage hair—such as UV rays and heat from styling—only 18% recognized static electricity as a problem. Even among those practicing hair care, only 12% consider static electricity care important, highlighting a significant gap that this project aims to fill by spreading knowledge about hair care's broad spectrum of challenges.

Accompanying the project is the expertise of Jun Hirabayashi, a fellow of the Japanese Society of Imaging Science and an expert in static control technology. He underscores that even minimal contact with hair can result in substantial physical stress that leads to noticeable hair damage.
