National Alzheimer's Collaborative Initiates Effort for Early Cognitive Decline Detection
National Alzheimer's Collaborative Unveils New Initiative
In a significant announcement, the National Alzheimer's Collaborative (NAC) today unveiled a pioneering initiative aimed at addressing a pressing issue in Alzheimer's care: the early identification of cognitive decline. This groundbreaking effort brings together prominent healthcare organizations across the nation, including Ascension Living, Community Health Network, Hackensack Meridian Health, Mayo Clinic, Northwestern, and Northeast Indiana Aging In-Home Services. The goal is simple yet crucial; it revolves around ensuring that those affected receive the necessary support and interventions at an early stage.
A staggering 8 million elderly Americans are living with mild cognitive impairment, yet around 600,000 of them have been formally diagnosed. This gap suggests that around 7.4 million individuals might be grappling with cognitive decline without even being aware of it. Substantial research indicates that families typically don’t realize there’s an issue until cognitive decline has profoundly affected their loved ones' daily lives, resulting in potentially irreversible losses of precious time.
Nadia Adams, the CEO and Co-Founder of Blue Agilis, stated, "If we can help identify cognitive concerns earlier, we can give patients and families more time to access the most appropriate interventions for them. We are honored to bring together some of the nation's leading healthcare organizations around this shared mission."
Objectives of the Initiative
The NAC outlines four primary objectives aimed at restructuring Alzheimer’s care:
1. Faster Diagnosis: Streamlining the processes involved in diagnosing cognitive decline.
2. Clearing Bottlenecks: Tackling the existing barriers between primary care, neurology, and memory care to improve patient flow and treatment access.
3. Connecting Patients: Ensuring that patients are linked with the appropriate treatment options tailored to their needs.
4. Scaling Successful Interventions: Sharing and scaling successful interventions across healthcare organizations nationwide to facilitate rapid advancements in care.
Dr. Heidi Lindroth, PhD, RN, FAAN of the Mayo Clinic has taken on the pivotal role of Scientific Director for the NAC. By combining resources, scientific expertise, and patient reach, the NAC is set to enhance access and generate real results for families navigating Alzheimer’s care.
The initiative is backed by Eli Lilly and Company Medical Affairs and, according to reports, it has sparked considerable interest, leading to a waitlist for additional organizations looking to join the National Alzheimer's Collaborative. For those keen to learn more or add their names to the waitlist, the Blue Agilis website offers comprehensive details.
