Polish & Slavic FCU Celebrates 50 Years with Record $700,000 Scholarships
Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union's Remarkable Milestone
In a momentous occasion marking its 50th anniversary, the Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union (PSFCU), headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, has established an impressive legacy by awarding a record $700,000 in scholarships to its young members. This notable achievement underscores the credit union’s unwavering commitment to supporting the educational ambitions of its community.
Since its inception in 1976, PSFCU has grown significantly and now operates 25 branches across six states, including the recently opened branch in Florida. The celebration of this milestone coincides with the awarding of scholarships to 602 students from 14 different states, proving that the reach and impact of PSFCU are extensive.
At the heart of this scholarship program are the 348 high school graduates who are set to embark on their college journeys this fall. Additionally, 242 college students already pursuing higher education are set to benefit from this funding. The program even extends beyond educational support with twelve PSFCU members securing summer internships in Poland, facilitated through a collaboration with the Catholic University of Lublin.
Two grand ceremonies were organized to honor the scholarship recipients on June 3 and June 6 at the Grand in Totowa, New Jersey, and the Copernicus Center in Chicago, respectively. These celebrations not only recognized the achievements of the young scholars but also highlighted the role of PSFCU in nurturing and showcasing the talent within the Polish-American community.
PSFCU President and CEO, Bogdan Chmielewski, spoke passionately about the significance of this year: "This year commemorates fifty years of success for the Polish-American community, embodied in the Polish & Slavic FCU. We take pride in sharing this success with you." He emphasized the unparalleled nature of their scholarship program, asserting that very few organizations offer a scholarship of such magnitude and scale.
The keynote speaker at the ceremonies was former Polish President Andrzej Duda, who was accompanied by his wife, former First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda. President Duda expressed gratitude to PSFCU for its proactive role in recognizing and supporting aspiring young individuals within the Polish-American community. In his address, he commented directly to the scholarship winners, saying, "You are the elite of the elite. Only those with ambition and a sense of being part of the elite participated in this program. The selected individuals truly represent the brightest among us."
Since the establishment of the PSFCU Scholarship Program in 2001, the union has allocated nearly $9 million to support over 7,600 individuals through educational scholarships. This substantial investment speaks volumes about the organization's mission: to empower the future leaders of the Polish-American community.
Founded in Greenpoint, New York, PSFCU stands as the largest ethnic credit union in the United States, boasting a membership base of over 127,000 and assets exceeding $2.7 billion. With the goal of not just serving its members financially but also enriching their lives through educational opportunities, PSFCU remains an integral part of the community.
This impressive scholarship initiative not only underscores the credit union's dedication to its members but also highlights the importance of education within the Polish-American community. As PSFCU continues to expand its reach and foster future leaders, the legacy of support will undoubtedly persist, inspiring generosity and commitment to education for many years to come.
