Supporting the Selection of 'Nadeshiko Brands' and 'Next Nadeshiko' in Japan's 2025 Economic Plan

In a significant step towards promoting gender equality in the corporate sector, EY ShinNihon LLC has initiated support for the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's (METI) 2025 project focusing on the selection of 'Nadeshiko Brands' and 'Next Nadeshiko Companies' that facilitate dual career and co-parenting initiatives. The public recruitment for these selections began in June, marking the sixth year of involvement for EY ShinNihon in this pivotal initiative.

Understanding Nadeshiko Brands
The Nadeshiko Brand initiative, launched in the fiscal year 2012, is a collaborative effort between METI and the Tokyo Stock Exchange, aimed at identifying companies that not only excel in promoting women's participation in the workforce but also maintain robust financial health. Recognizing the increasing importance of gender diversity in business success, these brands are specifically positioned to appeal to investors focused on long-term corporate value enhancement. The Next Nadeshiko initiative adds another layer by spotlighting companies that provide effective support for dual careers and co-parenting, regardless of gender.

Aim and Benefits of the Program
The program’s goal is to accelerate investment in firms that demonstrate a commitment to advancing women's roles in business. By highlighting these organizations, EY ShinNihon seeks to foster a financial ecosystem where responsible investments lead to sustainable growth. By promoting detailed performance data related to gender engagement, the initiative encourages broad market transparency and accountability.

Selection Criteria for Companies
As part of the selection process, companies demonstrating strong commitment to women's career progression alongside sound financial performance will be evaluated. Key considerations will include strategies for supporting female employees from recruitment through promotion, ensuring an uninterrupted career trajectory, and policies that enable work-life balance for all employees. The program anticipates identifying up to 30 Nadeshiko Brands and up to 20 Next Nadeshiko Companies this year.

Call for Applications
Public companies interested in applying for either or both designations are encouraged to submit their proposals via METI's website. The application deadline is strictly set for October 16, 2025, at 12:00 PM (JST), with the results expected to be announced in late March 2026.

Looking Ahead
The significance of this initiative cannot be understated in a society striving for gender equality in the workplace. By recognizing and celebrating firms that contribute to this vital cause, EY ShinNihon is aiding Japan’s economic landscape in becoming more inclusive and equitable. Applications will be accepted from firms across various industries, and the expectation is to witness a diverse spectrum of companies stepping up to lead in gender equality practices.
