Housing Works has officially announced that it will be the chosen beneficiary of the 2026 Front Runners New York LGBTQ+ Pride Run™ 4M, an iconic event that celebrates pride and unity among the LGBTQ+ community. Scheduled for June 27, 2026, the race will take place in the scenic Central Park as part of the city's Pride Weekend festivities.
Since its establishment in 1982, the Pride Run has successfully raised over $300,000 for various LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations, solidifying its reputation as the largest pride charity run worldwide. This year, Housing Works is being recognized for its remarkable 35-year commitment to delivering essential services such as healthcare, housing, and advocacy for vulnerable populations in New York. The organization plans to rally a solid team of over 20 staff members, board members, and clients to participate, all running under the heartfelt theme "Hearts in Motion United in Every Stride."
Although registration for the race is filled, there remains an opportunity for individuals to join as charity runners. Participants can secure a charity bib by pledging to raise $500, thus supporting Housing Works in its mission while gaining entry into the race.
Matthew Bernardo, the President of Housing Works, expressed gratitude to Front Runners New York for their partnership, highlighting the challenges faced in the nonprofit sector, especially concerning funding for HIV/AIDS initiatives. He stated, “Our history of effective advocacy often confronted political pushback, causing potential donors to hesitate. Nearly four decades into the AIDS epidemic, we are still coping with budget cuts and limited resources amid changing governmental priorities. Nevertheless, the urgency of our mission compels us to innovate.” Bernardo emphasized that Housing Works exemplifies how nonprofits can have a significant and tangible impact on those in need.
J Solle, Director of the 2026 Front Runners New York LGBTQ+ Pride Run, noted the importance of supporting Housing Works at this critical juncture in history. “The Pride Run has always been a testimony to our community's strength. Our collective effort symbolizes a significant step towards maintaining the momentum necessary for positive change that Housing Works embodies,” Solle remarked.
Reflecting on the 45-year history of the race, Ryan Hallett, President of Front Runners New York, shared insights about the journey the community has taken. “Many of our members faced risks just for the opportunity to run openly when this race was launched. Now, we see thousands uniting to partake in an event sold out within hours, showcasing the progress made. Yet, we must note that advancing requires persistent action.” By joining forces with Housing Works, they continue their legacy of activism, underscoring a commitment to address the challenges faced by the most marginalized individuals.
The race signifies a long-standing collaboration between Front Runners New York and New York Road Runners, two organizations that have dedicated themselves to serving the LGBTQ+ community through running. Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO of New York Road Runners, highlighted how influential this race has become during Pride Weekend. “We’re thrilled to unite the running community and amplify awareness and funds for the critical work conducted by Housing Works,” he stated.
