New Technology Estimates Depression Severity Using Voice Analysis

Revolutionary Approach to Assessing Depression Severity

During the 122nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry, a significant research achievement was presented by a collaboration among Kyoto University Medical School, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, and PST Medical Inc. This study introduced a novel technique for evaluating the severity of depressive symptoms through voice analysis, showcasing the potential of using voice biomarkers in clinical settings.

The research evaluated voice data collected from 350 subjects, including those with depressive symptoms and healthy individuals. By analyzing these voice features, a model was developed to estimate the severity of depression. The correlation between the severity scores estimated from voice data and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) scores demonstrated a meaningful association, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.579 during five-fold cross-validation.

Furthermore, the binary classification performance based on HAM-D revealed strong metrics: an ROC-AUC of 0.793 for mild depression (HAM-D ≥ 8) and an ROC-AUC of 0.780 for moderate depression (HAM-D ≥ 14). Notably, these robust figures remained stable even as the cut-off values were raised, indicating the reliability of the voice analysis model.

In the field of mental illness, enhancing the objectivity of symptom assessments and enabling continuous monitoring are crucial. Currently, most widely used evaluation scales rely heavily on structured interviews conducted by healthcare professionals or responses provided by patients themselves. Thus, there is a growing need for convenient and objective assessment methods. The results from this research illuminate the clinical potential of voice biomarkers, suggesting promising applications in diagnostic support and symptom monitoring within the realm of mental health.

PST Medical Inc. is committed to leveraging the multiple voice-feature-related patents they hold and advancing the development of medical device programs based on the findings of this study. The company's efforts will focus on the social implementation of voice biomarker technologies, further contributing to the mental healthcare landscape.
