Nathan L. Hecht to Illuminate Judicial Independence
The University of Houston Law Center is set to host a significant event that underscores the importance of judicial independence. On April 15, 2026, Nathan L. Hecht, the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, will deliver the prestigious 2026 Justice Ruby Kless Sondock Jurist-in-Residence Lectureship in Legal Ethics. Having retired in 2024, Hecht is now a partner at Jackson Walker and serves as a distinguished judicial fellow at New York University School of Law.
In his lecture titled "Whose Side Are You on Judge, Ours or Theirs? Judicial Independence in a Riven Civitas,” Hecht is expected to address the challenges faced by judges in a polarized society. This event is particularly relevant in a time when the judiciary's role is under intense scrutiny and debate.
Dean Leonard M. Baynes of the UH Law Center expressed excitement about the visit, highlighting the program's goal to cultivate close interactions between distinguished jurists and the Law Center's faculty, alumni, and students. “These discussions will not only enhance our educational community but will also motivate our students to aim for excellence in their future legal careers,” Baynes stated.
Hecht's judicial career is notable for significant reforms in the Texas court system. He played a vital role in revising administrative rules and was appointed to the federal Advisory Committee on Civil Rules by the Chief Justice of the United States. Under his leadership, efforts were intensified to ensure that underprivileged Texans have access to essential civil legal services. This commitment to public service highlights Hecht's dedication to an equitable legal system.
The Sondock Jurist-in-Residence program honors Justice Ruby Kless Sondock, a trailblazer in Texas law who graduated from the UH Law School in 1962. She not only ranked as valedictorian but also became the first female state district court judge in Harris County and later the first woman appointed to the Texas Supreme Court. In celebration of her legacy, the Law Center will also commemorate Sondock's 100th birthday at this event.
