Shaw Prize Expands to Include Computer Science

On January 28, 2026, the Shaw Prize Foundation revealed its most significant expansion in over twenty years by launching a new category dedicated to Computer Science. He stated, "Computer science prompts numerous bold questions that push the boundaries of human thought," asserting that adding this prize aligns seamlessly with Mr. Shaw's vision.

Kenneth Young, president of the Shaw Prize Council and vice-chair of the jury, confirmed that the new award will be given out alongside the three existing categories, following the same governance rules and selection processes. The prize will carry a significant monetary award of $1.2 million USD.

Leading the initiative for the Computer Science prize is Professor Tony Chan, who chaired the planning committee that gathered experts worldwide to define the global scope and guiding principles for this new award. He expressed pride in guiding the committee's efforts and his role as a selection committee member.

Jennifer Chayes, the first chair of the selection committee and dean of the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley, shared insights into the intellectual depth of computer science, which parallels other fundamental sciences celebrated by the prize. She highlighted the award's objective to honor significant advances that benefit humanity as a whole, urging field leaders to put forward nominations during the application submission period from September to November 2026. The inaugural winners will be announced in spring 2027, alongside the laureates of the existing prize categories.
