Justice for Caleigha Zangari: A Call to Action Against Human Trafficking Victimization

On February 4, 2025, a significant milestone was reached in the fight against human trafficking when Naasan Hazzard was found guilty of the murder of Caleigha Zangari. This verdict serves as a pivotal moment in highlighting the grim realities faced by victims of human trafficking. Rescue Hill, a dedicated non-profit organization, stresses the necessity of community involvement to prevent tragedies like Caleigha's from recurring.

Caleigha, who was not only a victim but also a loving mother and a U.S. Army veteran, exemplifies the struggles many face upon returning home from service. Following her service in Afghanistan, she encountered numerous personal challenges, including trauma and exploitation by a sex trafficker. Despite her determination to reclaim her life and care for her child, Caleigha found herself ensnared in a cycle of hardship that ultimately led to her participation in commercial sex work.

Tragically, on the night of August 15, 2024, her pursuit of financial stability led her to a dangerous encounter. Instead of the expected routine meeting, she was abducted and ultimately murdered—her life brutally cut short by a man with a violent past. This harrowing incident underscores a larger problem: the scarcity of support systems for vulnerable women caught in perilous situations.

The Heartbreaking Reality of Human Trafficking

Amanda Pettit, the Founder of Rescue Hill, articulates the dire circumstances surrounding Caleigha's life and urges that she lacked advocacy, resources, and knowledge about available support systems. "Caleigha didn't have an advocate. She didn't know about Rescue Hill. If she had, she might still be alive," Pettit reflects, emphasizing the importance of awareness and resources in preventing such tragedies.

In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, estimates suggest that around 85,000 online sex ads are posted each month. Many women behind these ads are victims of coercion and trafficking. Without intervention, these individuals may follow in Caleigha's tragic footsteps. Rescue Hill recognizes its crucial role in changing these outcomes by providing life-altering support and advocacy for trafficking victims.

Rescue Hill's Mission

Rescue Hill is committed to creating a safer environment for vulnerable women and combating human trafficking. By partnering strategically, advocating on behalf of survivors, and offering survivor-centered care, the organization aims to provide a pathway to healing for those in need. "We believe no woman should have to navigate this alone. We must stand in the gap for them before it's too late," Pettit explains.

To empower women and prevent further tragedies, Rescue Hill emphasizes the importance of collective action within the community. They are calling on local residents and organizations to join the fight against human trafficking by enhancing advocacy efforts, funding necessary victim services, and raising awareness about the pervasive issues surrounding the crime.
