China Southern Power Grid Unveils Cutting-Edge AI Innovations at AI World Conference

China Southern Power Grid Showcases AI Innovations

In a significant stride towards the future of energy management, China Southern Power Grid (CSG) presented its latest artificial intelligence (AI) technologies during the World AI Conference (WAIC) 2026 held in Shanghai. This event, which also served as a high-level meeting on global AI governance, spotlighted Chinese advancements in integrating electricity, carbon, and computing technologies.

Among the flagship solutions was MegaWatt Yunrui, an AI-native distribution network planning agent designed to revolutionize the planning processes within the energy sector. In a live demonstration, the system astoundingly generated a comprehensive distribution network planning report in just ten minutes. This report included risk assessments and recommendations for network topology. MegaWatt Yunrui is particularly noteworthy as it is the sole project from a central public enterprise to have received such distinction, placing it among the top ten showcases at the conference.

This year marked a pivotal moment as the coordination of computing infrastructure with electrical networks was acknowledged in the Chinese government's activity report for the first time. CSG is committed to establishing itself as a global leader in this trifecta of electricity, carbon management, and information technology. To support this ambition, the company is focusing on building an all-encompassing technological stack entirely developed in-house. This stack will include foundational models tailored for the electricity sector, intelligent robots, and refined digital infrastructure.

Among the standout products displayed were various technologies hailed as national firsts that hold international significance. CSG stated, "We have integrated three traditionally independent systems—electricity, carbon, and computing—into the first Chinese platform for industrial-scale coordination of these systems."

At the core of this innovative platform is MegaWatt Multimodal 2.0, a foundational model meticulously designed for the electricity sector. On the application layer, MegaWatt Yunrui serves as the AI-based distribution network planning agent, developed to bolster national energy security and facilitate the deployment of next-generation electrical networks. In the realm of digital infrastructures, CSG introduced a range of groundbreaking innovations, including PowerAtomOS—a unified operating system specially crafted for Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the electricity sector.

PowerAtomOS is designed to ensure connectivity and centralized management for hundreds of millions of connected devices, accommodating critical electrical equipment across virtually all operational scenarios within CSG’s service area. CSG emphasized that its strategic vision transcends the mere application of AI technologies, aiming instead at establishing the foundational technological elements necessary for the upcoming generation of smart electricity networks.

In summary, the advancements introduced by China Southern Power Grid at WAIC 2026 reflect a robust commitment to harnessing AI for enhanced energy efficiency and management. With their innovative approach and comprehensive technological solutions, CSG is poised to lead the charge in transforming the global energy landscape for years to come.
