Mars Snacks Europe Achieves Full Renewable Energy Transition Across All Factories

Mars Snacks Commits to Renewable Energy

In an impressive push towards sustainability, Mars Incorporated has announced that all ten of its Snacking factories in Europe are now completely powered by renewable energy. This significant milestone highlights the company's commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in the food production industry.

Located across various countries including the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and the UK, these factories produce approximately 900,000 tonnes of beloved snacks annually. This range includes popular brands like SNICKERS®, TWIX®, MM'S®, SKITTLES®, and ORBIT/EXTRA®, with a staggering 85% of these products consumed locally within Europe.

A Long-Term Investment

This monumental achievement is a result of a long-term investment strategy where Mars has committed €1.5 billion over the past five years to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and infrastructures in the European market. The investment included the establishment of a wind farm in 2016, which was a pivotal step towards transitioning all confectionery manufacturing sites across Europe to renewable electricity.

Mars has implemented not only direct renewable electricity sources but also Guarantees of Origin (GO) certificates for the remaining renewable energy needs. This purchase is crucial as it aligns with their larger strategy of decarbonising the entire value chain, ensuring that the energy consumed across their operations is sustainably sourced.

Environmental Commitment

Marc Carena, the Regional President for Mars Wrigley, emphasized the company's stance on sustainability, stating, “At Mars, we believe that the world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today. Sustainability is not just a practice; it is a central tenet of our strategic direction.
