New Kitchen Car 'FOOBOUR' Starts Operations in Uwajima, Ehime

In an inspiring milestone for disaster relief efforts, the Pal System Group has recently inaugurated a kitchen car named 'FOOBOUR' in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, which has been repurposed and donated to the Peace Boat Disaster Relief Center (PBV) based in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The vehicle has been entrusted to a local NPO and will serve as a food bank hub, catering specifically to single-parent households.

The innovative name 'FOOBOUR' cleverly combines the words 'food' and 'harbor,' reflecting its intended mission. Equipped with kitchen space and both freezer and refrigerator units, this mobile kitchen is designed to efficiently provide nutritious food to those in need. This marks the first operational vehicle provided by the Pal System Group and has been lent free of charge to the non-profit organization U.grandma Japan, which is leading the initiative in providing essential supplies. Dubbed 'FOOBOUR - Uwajima Port -', it has begun its service aimed at the local community.

Typically stationed at the parking lot of the central community center in the city, the kitchen car will serve food and daily necessities to single-parent families receiving child-rearing allowances. Furthermore, in an effort to enhance local disaster preparedness, there are plans for the kitchen car to participate in community events. This initiative aims not only to provide immediate assistance but also to raise disaster awareness among residents. In the event of a major disaster, the kitchen car will be utilized for mass cooking and distribution services as part of firefighting and disaster relief efforts.

The official launch event took place on July 7, coinciding with the eighth anniversary of the devastating Western Japan Floods that significantly affected Uwajima City among other regions. During the event, Mayor Fumiyasu Okahara articulated the deep significance embodied in the vehicle, stating, “I feel that FOOBOUR contains the lessons and collective efforts derived from the experience of the Western Japan Floods. By utilizing this vehicle, we aim to expand efforts to support both our everyday lives and emergency situations in collaboration with the private sector.”

In a statement at the event, PBV Director Yasuhiro Kamijima emphasized the growing need for effective disaster response mechanisms, noting that disasters in Japan have quadrupled in the last four decades. He highlighted the critical importance of public-private partnerships in ensuring timely assistance during crises, stressing that without established trust, swift support cannot be achieved. Together with the Pal System and other collaborative efforts, he hopes more people will learn about this pioneering initiative.
