Addressing the Global Electricity Gap: The 2026 Low Carbon Industry Forum's Insights on Energy Solutions

On September 15, 2026, Shenzhen hosted the 2026 Global Low Carbon Industry Forum, a key event focusing on how to maximize sunlight to provide electricity to regions lacking access. This forum was co-organized by the Global Solar Council, the China Energy Research Society, the World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, and Huawei Digital Power. Participants included industry leaders, prominent scholars, network operators, and corporate representatives from around the globe, all gathered to explore the integration of networking and artificial intelligence technologies in reshaping the global energy landscape.

During the opening address, Mr. Hou Jinlong, a board member of Huawei and president of Huawei Digital Power, emphasized that decarbonization, electrification, digitization, and smart technologies are becoming key trends in the global energy transformation. He pointed out that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the challenges of energy transformation, as different regions and economies face various structural complexities. In areas with widespread renewable energy use, the focus is on system reliability, while in developing economies, ensuring electricity supply and reducing costs are paramount. Un-energized regions primarily seek inclusive access to electricity.

The forum's discussions revealed AI's integration into networking technologies as offering a novel, replicable solution that allows renewable energy to provide low costs, high reliability, sustainability, and secure supply. Huawei Digital Power is committed to promoting a vision of 'networking everywhere and AI everywhere' to collaboratively build a healthy, prosperous, and sustainable digital energy sector ecosystem.

The opening also highlighted critical challenges in the integration of networking and AI, as voiced by various speakers. A representative from the Global Solar Council discussed how the world is moving from fossil fuel dependency to energy independence based on local solar power and energy storage, emphasizing the technological revolution enabling this shift. Furthermore, the seamless integration of photovoltaic systems and energy storage was showcased as a crucial element in creating a more resilient electricity system.

Professor Wang Xiongfei from Tsinghua University addressed the new challenges posed by AI data centers at the GW level, suggesting future data centers should not only consume large amounts of electricity but also possess the ability to monitor network conditions and proactively support the grid. He proposed a collaborative design concept linking chips and grids, highlighting key technologies for ensuring stable interaction between data centers and electric grids.

Additionally, Patrick Clerens, Secretary-General of Energy Storage Europe, discussed developments in energy storage market mechanisms in Europe. He noted that as the share of renewable energy continues to rise, system inertia decreases, making grid forming capacity a crucial necessity. His insights included details about market-driven research in grid formation services and how countries like Germany are enhancing their grid balancing capacities, leading to new business models in the energy storage sector.

Dr. Liu Yunfeng, Chief Scientist at Huawei Digital Power, presented on how the transition of power systems from 'electromagnetic-mechanical systems' to 'silicon-based programmable systems' signifies a paradigm shift. He discussed the end-to-end validation system developed by Huawei in networking technology and stressed AI as an indispensable capability for achieving autonomy in complex systems.

The concluding session of the forum culminated in the launch of the Global Joint Initiative on Grid Forming and AI. This initiative, supported by leaders from various sectors, aims to promote the large-scale implementation and standardization of these technologies, addressing energy imbalance using technological innovation. This effort is particularly vital for the approximately 700 million people worldwide without access to electricity, aiming to provide them with environmental-friendly, stable, and affordable power.

The forum underscored a pivotal mission to bridge the global electricity gap, rapidly shaping a green, stable, and intelligent energy system powered by renewable sources such as solar and wind energy, coupled with energy storage solutions.
