Beko Advocates for Unified Industrial Policy
In the context of Europe's transition to a new industrial policy, Beko, the largest home appliance manufacturer on the continent, has made a powerful case for a more cohesive and robust approach toward industrial advancement. Speaking at the pivotal Clean Industrial Deal event, Beko emphasized the need for ensuring that industries focused on decarbonization, energy efficiency, and innovation remain globally competitive.
Hakan Bulgurlu, CEO of Beko, firmly believes that Europe requires an ambitious industrial strategy rooted in investment and accompanied by a regulatory framework that fosters business growth. He stated, "The Clean Industrial Deal signals a turning point for Europe’s industrial future, but the continent must fulfill its promise to become a leader in green and competitive industries without jeopardizing our manufacturing base."
Beko calls upon the European Commission to seize the opportunity to reassess the European industrial ecosystem and acknowledge the strategic role that the appliance sector can play in fulfilling Europe's climate and industrial ambitions. Notably, the appliance industry is not only a significant employer and innovator but also plays a crucial role in reinforcing supply chain resilience while directly contributing to energy efficiency in every home across the European Union.
High-efficiency appliances are touted as some of the quickest and most cost-effective methods for lowering emissions, reducing energy costs, and supporting the transition to clean energy. To propel Europe towards climate neutrality, Beko urges the EU to enhance support for the industry through investment incentives and ensure equitable competitive conditions in international trade.
As one of the largest manufacturers in the world, Beko acknowledges its crucial place in advancing decarbonization efforts. The company prioritizes energy efficiency, often labeled the "first fuel" in the clean energy transition. Currently, over 70% of the products manufactured by Beko are energy-efficient, and this segment accounts for the majority of its revenue. Bulgurlu notes that while companies often balance profit against responsibility, Beko demonstrates that achieving a viable balance between the two is not only possible but also economically prudent.
Beko has already established itself as a leader in sustainable innovation, with products that conserve energy and reduce waste, aligning with the Green Deal objectives. However, the company asserts that achieving success will require collaborative efforts, urging Europe to transition from reactive policies to proactive investments in its industrial sector.
Bulgurlu emphasizes that targeted incentives for adopting renewable energy, developing manufacturing infrastructure, and designing sustainable products are vital for ensuring the continent's future competitiveness.
