Envision Energy and REE Group Join Forces for Southeast Asia's Largest Nearshore Wind Project
Envision Energy and REE Group: A New Era for Southeast Asia’s Wind Energy
In a landmark agreement aimed at bolstering renewable energy in Southeast Asia, Envision Energy has partnered with Vietnam's REE Group to launch the region's largest nearshore wind project. The ambitious venture, set to generate a total of 128MW, encompasses two key phases located in Vinh Long Province: the V1-3 Phase II at 48 MW and the V1-56 Phase II at 80 MW.
The introduction of sixteen state-of-the-art EN-226/8.XMW offshore wind turbines is poised to define a new benchmark in wind energy generation across not just Vietnam, but the entire Southeast Asian landscape. This initiative supports Vietnam’s net-zero targets and signifies a significant stride toward sustainable energy solutions in the region.
Construction and Technology Behind the Project
Envision Energy is adopting stringent offshore wind standards to address the unique challenges posed by Vietnam’s climate, particularly its high humidity and salt spray. This consideration is paramount in ensuring the operational reliability and performance of the turbines throughout their lifespan, projected to last over 20 years. The project has also been recognized as among the first batch of initiatives approved under Vietnam's Power Development Plan VIII (PDP VIII), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s energy transition strategy.
While the project gets underway, both phases of construction are set to commence simultaneously. Wind conditions in the area are favorable, with average speeds exceeding 7 meters per second, making it an optimal location for harnessing wind energy.
Regional Impact and Future Prospects
Edward Hou, the Senior Vice President and President of Asia-Pacific at Envision Energy, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration, stating, “This endeavor marks the first nearshore offshore wind project cluster delivered under Vietnam's Power Development Plan VIII and opens a new chapter for offshore wind development in Southeast Asia.” He noted that the successful execution of this project could provide crucial support for REE Group’s energy transition and serve as a replicable model for similar projects within the region.
REE Group, represented by General Manager Mr. Ashok, stressed the importance of Envision Energy's technology leadership, reliability, and extensive experience in large-scale grid-connected operations as decisive factors in supplier selection. Ashok highlighted that this project is anticipated to set a new industry benchmark for offshore wind in Vietnam, further enhancing the credibility of the country's burgeoning renewable energy sector.
Global Significance
The EN-226/8.XMW turbine model has already proven its effectiveness, with over 2.5GW in confirmed orders since its launch in 2022. Deployed extensively in Chinese offshore projects, this turbine has demonstrated stable performance over a three-year operational period, showcasing its viability for low-wind-speed offshore conditions.
As the project culminates, full grid connection is expected by October 2026, potentially leading to a significant increase in renewable energy contributions in Vietnam. This partnership not only aims to deliver efficient energy solutions but also sets a precedent for future collaborations in renewable energy across Southeast Asia, steering the entire region toward a more sustainable energy future.
This collaboration is a beacon of innovation, commitment, and strategic vision that underlines the potential of renewable energy to power nations into a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.
