Clarios Expands Low Voltage Energy Storage with Acquisition of Maxwell Technologies
On November 12, 2025, Clarios, a global leader in low voltage energy storage solutions, officially announced the acquisition of Maxwell Technologies, a prominent manufacturer of supercapacitor cells and modules. This strategic move aims to bolster Clarios' capability in delivering high-performance energy storage solutions tailored for short-duration applications.
The Significance of the Acquisition
Maxwell Technologies specializes in supercapacitors, which provide rapid charging and discharging capabilities, making them an ideal choice for applications requiring quick bursts of power, such as data centers, grid support, and onsite power generation. Supercapacitors can sustain up to a million cycles and function effectively under extreme temperatures, ranging from -40°C to +65°C, while requiring minimal maintenance and posing no fire risk.
The acquisition is particularly beneficial for Clarios as it enhances their supply chain stability and strengthens their commitment to developing a supply chain specifically for supercapacitors, aiding both Original Equipment (OE) customers in the United States and globally.
Strengthening the Clarios Position
With this acquisition, Clarios not only maintains its industry leadership in low voltage battery lifecycle solutions but also aligns with its goal of innovating energy storage technologies. Mark Wallace, CEO of Clarios, emphasized that the supercapacitors produced by Maxwell are engineered to deliver reliable, safe, and long-lasting energy storage solutions for customers across various sectors.
Maxwell Technologies brings decades of experience in supercapacitor innovation to the table, having shipped over 85 million supercapacitor cells. Their technology is utilized in energy generation, grid stabilization, automotive applications, transportation, and industrial automation. This synergy will empower Clarios to offer next-generation energy storage solutions while balancing their commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Maintaining Client Relationships
Clarios plans to operate Maxwell Technologies as a standalone business within the United States, ensuring that existing client relationships in sectors like data centers, power grids, military, and industrial applications are maintained and actively nurtured. This strategic integration not only facilitates Clarios’ service to their automotive customers but also paves the way for expanding its footprint in non-automotive sectors.
