The excitement around the upcoming Osaka-Kansai Expo continues to grow, especially with the inauguration of the official cafe and gelato shop, Caffe’&Gelato Italia by IIACJ, established by the International Institute of Coffee Tasting – Japan Branch (IIAC-Japan). Set to open on April 14, this cafe is located within the Italian Pavilion, marking the nation's presence as a Gold Sponsor.

A Taste of Italy Awaits

Located right in the heart of the expo, the cafe aims to immerse visitors in the rich culinary traditions of Italy. From authentic espresso to delightful gelato, the menu is crafted for those seeking a genuine Italian experience. Some highlights include:

  • - Aperitivo Set: Enjoy a classic Italian tradition with a selection of drinks paired with delectable snacks for just ¥1,980.
  • - Gelato: Indulge in a double scoop for ¥880 or a triple scoop for ¥1,100, featuring flavors like pistachio, black cherry, and Sicilian lemon.
  • - Affogato: An exquisite dessert where gelato meets a shot of Illy espresso for just ¥800.
  • - Various espresso-based drinks, including cappuccino and macchiato, priced from ¥450 to ¥950.

The cafe's atmosphere is enriched by its vibrant staff of around 35 individuals, including Italian language students and Italian exchange students, who are eager to enhance your experience through personal interactions and cultural exchanges.

Celebrate Italian Gastronomy

The tradition of Aperitivo, where drinks and small bites are enjoyed before meals, is emphasized as an essential aspect of Italian dining culture. The cafe is proud to feature a variety of options including refreshing Italian beers and spritz cocktails, all priced affordably at ¥1,450. Visitors can also savor the seasonal fruit granita and Italian cream donuts known as Bomboloni, among other highlights.

As a voice for Italian culinary recognition, IIAC-Japan is currently working towards UNESCO recognition for Italian cuisine. They expect a decision by December of this year, enhancing the cultural significance of the Italian Pavilion.

Embracing Italian Culture

Yumiko Momoi, the representative director of IIAC-Japan, expresses her enthusiasm about the cafe’s opening, stating that they aim to create a space where visitors can enjoy the rich culture of Italy amidst the diversity of the expo. The team plans to integrate events from the pavilion, providing an immersive environment that highlights not only the flavors but also the ambiance of Italy.

The IIAC-Japan is committed to improving the quality and recognition of Italian coffee culture in Japan and was established in 2008. It serves as the first overseas branch of IIAC, boasting over 1,000 members including 150 certified baristas across the nation.
