Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC has formally submitted its application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for authorization to develop the MVP Boost project. This key initiative is designed to expand the capacity of the MVP Mainline system in response to strong demand for natural gas, particularly in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic U.S.

The MVP Boost project aims to increase the existing capacity from 500 thousand dekatherms per day (Mdth/d) to an impressive 600 Mdth/d. This surge in capacity is supported by significant interest from shippers who are investment-grade utility customers, demonstrating a robust demand for reliable natural gas supply as emphasized by the company. The MVP Mainline itself, which stretches over 303 miles from Wetzel County, West Virginia, to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, commenced operations in June 2024 with a full capacity of 2 Bcf/d achieved in January 2025. Its operational success and importance in providing supplementary natural gas during periods of high demand have been recognized, particularly during critical winter weather conditions.

Since announcing the initial interest in the MVP Boost project, shippers have responded with overwhelming support, amassing over 1 Bcf/d of interest during the open season conducted in June and July 2025. With this substantial backing, Mountain Valley Pipeline increased the capacity target, evolving it from an initial 500 Mdth/d to the current 600 Mdth/d, reflecting the heightened demand and value of this project.

As stated by Toby Z. Rice, President and CEO of EQT, the MVP Boost project not only aims to amplify the operational capacity of this natural gas infrastructure but also strives to provide a broader impact on the nation's economy and energy security. In addition to satisfying local demand, this project is pivotal in offering a crucial link in the supply chain for natural gas transportation from prolific shale regions to consumers.

Further emphasizing the economic significance of MVP Boost, a recent impact analysis by FTI Consulting estimates that the project will generate approximately $450 million in spending for equipment, services, and labor, alongside $127 million in federal, state, and local tax revenues during the construction phase. Operationally, MVP Boost is anticipated to contribute an additional $149 million in new annual tax revenues, while also facilitating job creation, with 140 jobs expected in West Virginia and 60 in Virginia during the construction period.
