Project Healthy Minds and Harvard's Initiative for Workforce Mental Health
Project Healthy Minds has launched a new initiative aimed at addressing workforce mental health issues in collaboration with esteemed researchers from Harvard Business School. As the foremost nonprofit focused on expanding mental health service access in the U.S., Project Healthy Minds is set to create a significant shift in how companies approach and measure mental health support within the workplace.
The New Coalition
The newly established
Project Healthy Minds Workforce Lab will serve as a pioneering research hub, bringing together leading firms, notable scholars, and influential thought leaders to develop a standardized framework that assesses effective mental health interventions in the workplace. The primary goal is to create an evidence-based understanding of the connection between mental health and workforce performance, ultimately equipping organizations to foster healthier environments for their employees.
Founding members of this coalition include prominent companies like Acast, Apollo Global Management, AXIS Capital, KPMG, L'Oréal USA, ServiceNow, TD SYNNEX, Teneo, and Universal Music Group. Co-chaired by Jacqui Canney, Chief People and AI Enablement Officer at ServiceNow, and Stephanie Kramer, Chief Human Resources Officer at L'Oréal North America, the Lab aims to bridge the gap between corporate operations and academic research.
Addressing Financial and Operational Challenges
The conversation surrounding workforce mental health often gets categorized as merely a topic of benefits and wellness. However, with the World Health Organization estimating the loss of
12 billion working days annually due to depression and anxiety—and the staggering
$1 trillion in productivity losses—it's clear that mental health must be prioritized as a vital operational and financial concern.
Phillip Schermer, the Founder and CEO of Project Healthy Minds, emphasizes that mental health issues directly impact performance and employee retention. Through this initiative, the Lab aims not only to address these issues but also to transform perceptions, highlighting that mental health is a core performance issue leaders must actively engage with.
Research Collaboration and Outcomes
The partnership with Harvard Business School involves academic oversight by Ryan W. Buell, who will help shape an ambitious research agenda to foster collaboration between businesses and scholars. The Lab intends to generate rigorous evidence of effective mental health practices, ultimately leading to actionable insights for employers. Each member company will benefit from comprehensive data, including peer benchmarking, ROI analyses, and tailored recommendations aligned with the evolving demands of a dynamic business environment.
Moreover, the Lab's findings will not remain internal; aggregated results will be shared to enhance collective understanding across industries, aiding companies in transitioning from good intentions to verified practices.
Engaging Employees and Communities
In addition to supporting member companies, Project Healthy Minds aims to directly benefit employees through engagement strategies, volunteer opportunities, and access to the annual
World Mental Health Day Festival in New York City, which champions awareness and destigmatization.
The Lab will spotlight two pivotal moments each year—
World Mental Health Day on October 10 and
Mental Health Awareness Month in May—as platforms for dialogue, insights, and community involvement.
The Future of Workforce Mental Health
Project Healthy Minds is not just another mental health initiative; it's a
long-term commitment to sustainable solutions in workplace wellness. The organization, driven by Millennial and Gen Z values, has already impacted over
500,000 individuals through its existing programs. This latest initiative stands as a testament to its dedication to reimagining how companies prioritize mental health, creating a ripple effect of positive changes that extend far beyond the walls of any single organization.
