Federal Charges Against Dr. Mukaram Gazi Dismissed by U.S. DOJ

In an unprecedented move, the U.S. Department of Justice has terminated all federal criminal charges against Dr. Mukaram Gazi, a well-known urologist based in New Jersey. The decision not only absolves Dr. Gazi of any wrongdoing but also sets a remarkable precedent in the landscape of healthcare law and prosecution. This announcement, made on May 20, 2025, follows significant scrutiny and allegations concerning the prescription of controlled substances, particularly those related to the controversial opioid crisis.

Dr. Gazi was initially charged with accepting bribes exceeding $130,000 from Insys Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company known for the production of Subsys, a potent fentanyl-based medication. The indictment suggested that he prescribed Subsys unlawfully in exchange for financial incentives, alongside other charges related to the distribution of controlled substances such as Adderall. The four-count indictment was a part of a larger federal initiative aimed at combating opioid-related abuses across the nation.

However, the surprising dismissal of all charges, which included allegations of healthcare fraud and violations of the Controlled Substances Act, came without any plea agreement, financial penalties, or admission of guilt from Dr. Gazi. Notably, he stands out as the only individual exonerated from a group of 35 individuals who faced similar prosecutions relating to Insys—precedence to which the legal community has observed as exceedingly rare.

The defense of Dr. Gazi was led by Anthony Mahajan, a former federal prosecutor, now the founder of Health Law Alliance, a law firm specializing in the defense of healthcare professionals against complex legal accusations. Mahajan’s representation emphasized the rights of physicians to prescribe medications
