Celebrating 50 Years of Sight & Sound: A Journey Through Faith and Storytelling

Sight & Sound’s Remarkable 50-Year Journey

Sight & Sound, the renowned faith-based entertainment company, proudly marks its 50th anniversary this year, celebrating a monumental journey that spans five decades of immersive storytelling. Founded in 1976, this Lancaster-based company has evolved from simple slideshow presentations to a powerful platform that has captivated over 40 million audience members across live theater, streaming services, and feature films.

The Foundation of a Legacy

The company’s roots trace back to Pennsylvania, where its founders sought to bring scripture and history to life. Sight & Sound’s initial productions were a modest affair, primarily intended to enlighten and inspire local communities. Yet, as the years passed, the vision of Sight & Sound grew exponentially. The compelling narratives and cinematic portrayals of biblical stories drew significant attention, leading to an enduring legacy of faith-based entertainment.

Matt Neff, the Chief Executive Officer of Sight & Sound, emphasizes the company's success as a testament to God's faithfulness. “Throughout our story, God has led the way for seas to part and giants to fall,” Neff states. This unwavering faith has been evident throughout their journey, particularly during challenging moments.

Trials and Triumphs

One of the defining moments in Sight & Sound’s history occurred in 1997 when a devastating fire engulfed the Entertainment Centre in Lancaster, which had just premiered the production of 'NOAH.' This unfortunate incident catalyzed a significant turning point for the organization. According to Katie Miller, Vice President of Brand Development and granddaughter of the company's founders, it was a pivotal conversation at the kitchen table in the aftermath of the fire that solidified their commitment to the mission: “Just a few days after the fire, my grandparents decided that Sight & Sound was more than just a business; it was a calling.”

Within an astonishing 18 months, the team rebuilt an even larger theater on the same site, which could accommodate over 2,000 guests. Fast forward to the current day, and Sight & Sound proudly welcomes nearly 2 million guests annually across its two locations.

Nurturing New Talent

Part of Sight & Sound’s mission does not rest solely on producing theater. In 2013, they launched the Sight & Sound Conservatory—a two-year apprenticeship program dedicated to training the next generation of Christ-centered artists. Since its inception, the conservatory has seen 122 students pass through its doors, equipping them to share the Gospel message creatively.

Embracing New Media

In an era where digital consumption is prevalent, Sight & Sound has embraced technological advancements to broaden its reach. The launch of Sight & Sound TV in 2020 has made its stage productions accessible to audiences worldwide. Today, their films, which include titles like 'I HEARD THE BELLS' and 'A GREAT AWAKENING,' help communicate the Gospel to viewers in 200 countries and territories.

As part of their 50th-anniversary celebrations, Sight & Sound has introduced several initiatives to engage their audience:
  • - A brand new stage production titled 'JOSHUA,' which has taken nearly four years to produce, debuted in Lancaster, PA.
  • - The highly anticipated feature film 'A GREAT AWAKENING' was released in theaters nationwide.
  • - Guests were offered a complimentary week of streaming on Sight & Sound TV, allowing them to experience several beloved productions.
  • - A special limited-edition merchandise line is now available both at theater retail spaces and online.

Looking Ahead

As Sight & Sound embarks on its next chapter, exciting developments are already underway for the future. The company plans to unveil a third feature film alongside fresh stage productions. This fall, audiences will have the chance to watch 'JOSHUA' extended into a unique movie theater event, continuing their mission of sharing stories that reveal the power of the Gospel across different mediums.

Additionally, the company has announced its upcoming 2027 theatrical season, which will see productions like 'JONAH' and 'DANIEL' enriching audiences in both Lancaster and Branson.

Neff concluded, “The past 50 years have been a testament to God's faithfulness, the dedication of our team members, and the incredible support from our guests year after year.” As Sight & Sound steps into the future, the anticipation of how they will continue to share His story remains a powerful motivator.
