In a significant advancement in hematological diagnostics, ARUP Laboratories has announced the launch of its pioneering CLARISPECT™ Multiple Myeloma MRD assay, a state-of-the-art solution employing Spectral Flow Cytometry technology. This groundbreaking assay is set to transform how minimal residual disease (MRD) is detected in patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an aggressive and commonly recurring form of blood cancer.

Understanding Multiple Myeloma and the Importance of MRD Assessment


Multiple myeloma arises from abnormal plasma cells that proliferate uncontrollably, severely disrupting the production of antibodies critical for immune function. It affects roughly 202,000 individuals in the United States, with projections of 36,000 new cases anticipated in 2026, according to the American Cancer Society. By offering a technique with higher sensitivity, we will directly impact a subset of patients who otherwise might not have been identified as MRD positive.” This innovation means earlier detection of disease re-emergence, providing healthcare providers with critical information sooner and enabling more informed decision-making for treatment.

The assay accomplishes this with notably lower specimen volume requirements, a crucial factor when dealing with challenging specimen types, such as bone marrow samples. By condensing multiple relevant markers into a single testing tube, efficiency is improved, which may lead to increased patient comfort and enhanced clinical workflows.

According to Dr. David Ng, ARUP's medical director specialty in Hematopathology, the CLARISPECT™ assay can discern minimal residual disease with remarkable accuracy, capable of identifying as few as 14 neoplastic cells in a population of 5 million cells, and boasts a confidence level of 95%. “This level of detection can significantly change the treatment landscape for myeloma patients,” Ng noted, highlighting the assay’s potential to not only impact ongoing treatments but also shape future clinical trials and therapeutic strategies.
