Greenberg Traurig Expands New York Real Estate Footprint with Brian Helweil's Expertise

Greenberg Traurig Expands its New York Real Estate Practice

In a significant move to bolster its position in the competitive New York real estate sector, global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP has announced the addition of Brian Helweil as a shareholder in its New York office. Helweil joins from Loeb & Loeb LLP, where he garnered extensive experience representing a diverse clientele that includes owners, developers, investors, landlords, and tenants in various real estate transactions.

Helweil's practice is notably distinguished by its focus on complex commercial office and retail leasing arrangements. His breadth of expertise further encompasses acquisitions, dispositions, financings, joint ventures, and an array of intricate real estate matters on both a national and local scale. This appointment comes at a time when New York's office leasing market is demonstrating remarkable resilience, buoyed by sustained demand for premium office space and active leasing across Manhattan.

Richard A. Rosenbaum, Executive Chairman of Greenberg Traurig, expressed confidence in Helweil's capabilities, stating, "Brian further strengthens our depth and expertise in the New York leasing market and beyond. Considering our standing as a prominent real estate firm locally, nationally, and globally, enhancing our critical mass in the robust New York office leasing market has been a strategic focus for us. Brian epitomizes this strength. His esteemed reputation, quality of work, and compatibility with our firm culture signify an invaluable addition to our team."

Helweil is recognized for his proficient negotiation skills in finalizing office leases, retail leases, ground leases, and subleases for both landlords and tenants. Some of his noteworthy achievements include providing counsel to a global private equity firm regarding a substantial 200,000-square-foot headquarters lease, representing a real estate fund in negotiating a 350,000-square-foot headquarters lease for a significant healthcare provider, and managing a massive 1-million-plus-square-foot headquarters lease for a multinational media and entertainment corporation.

Robert J. Ivanhoe, Senior Chair of the Global Real Estate Practice, alongside Co-Chair Stephen L. Rabinowitz, asserted, "Brian adds significant depth and expertise in several key areas, such as acquisitions, joint ventures, and leasing. His diverse and sophisticated transactional experience will be instrumental in enhancing our client service. Our commitment to strategically expanding our practice will ensure that clients—regardless of their location or real estate needs—receive exemplary legal representation."

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining Greenberg Traurig, Helweil cited the firm’s global real estate platform and multidisciplinary prowess as compelling factors in his decision. He remarked, "I am thrilled to contribute to the growth of Greenberg Traurig’s leasing practice and to uphold the firm’s stellar reputation in New York and beyond. The exceptional global real estate capabilities and diverse expertise of the firm will empower me to engage with larger clients while navigating more complex transactions. Throughout my career, I've engaged with many Greenberg Traurig lawyers, always impressed by their professionalism, collaborative spirit, and dedication to client service. For me, Greenberg Traurig was the only firm I considered joining. This is precisely where I aspire to be."

Helweil earned his Juris Doctor degree from Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and completed his undergraduate studies at New York University.
