Record-Breaking Milestone in the Medical Residency Match

On March 21, 2025, the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) proudly unveiled the results of the 2025 Main Residency Match®, marking a historic achievement in the field of medical education. This year’s match saw a remarkable 52,498 applicants registered, representing a 4.1% increase from 2024. Out of these, 47,208 individuals actively participated by submitting their rank order lists, underscoring a strong commitment to their future in medicine.

The number of available residency positions has also surged, with 43,237 positions offered for the Match, up 4.2% from the previous year. As of noon ET on match day, each successful applicant learned where their medical careers will officially commence—an exciting juncture for countless aspiring physicians.

Significant Changes and Increases

In a pivotal development, the NRMP proudly welcomed two new specialties into the fray: Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The total offerings now include 6,626 certified program tracks, the highest on record, with a notable increase of 231 programs compared to last year.

The demographics of the matched applicants reveal a competitive landscape. The U.S. MD seniors remain the dominant force, contributing 20,368 active applicants with a match rate of 93.5%, consistent with previous years. Meanwhile, Osteopathic DO seniors, totaling 8,392 applicants, achieved a PGY-1 match rate of 92.6%, showcasing progress in their residency opportunities.

Notably, international medical graduates (IMGs) also made their mark, albeit with varying outcomes. Active U.S. citizen IMGs numbered 4,587, and they experienced a slight increase in their match rates, while non-U.S. citizen IMGs surged to 11,465, reflecting a rise of 14.4%. However, this influx did place some downward pressure on overall match rates.

Focus on Primary Care and Emergency Medicine

A continuous trend in the match data is the escalating demand for primary care positions. This year, residency programs allocated 20,300 categorical positions in primary care, leading to a fill rate of 93.5%, a strong indication of the vitality of these specialties in the healthcare framework.

Specialties like Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine saw varied fills, with Internal Medicine seeing a substantial increase in positions. Conversely, Family Medicine's fill rate dipped slightly, a reflection of both growing demand and changing healthcare dynamics.

Emergency Medicine also made headlines with an impressive fill rate of 97.9% for 3,068 offered positions, signaling a renewed interest in this high-demand specialty. The last few years had seen fluctuations in this field, but the recent uptick in successful matches bodes well for the future.
