Collins Aerospace Expands MRO Facility in Malaysia, Meeting Growing Demand
Collins Aerospace Expands MRO Footprint in Malaysia
Collins Aerospace, a division of RTX, has made a substantial $63 million investment to expand its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility located at Subang Aerotech Park in Malaysia. This development results in a fourfold increase in the size of the MRO operations, escalating from 46,000 to a remarkable 164,000 square feet. This strategic expansion is not just a facility upgrade; it establishes Subang as a pivotal hub for advanced component MRO services in the region.
The growth in the aviation sector is expected to directly impact MRO demand in the Asia-Pacific region significantly. According to forecasts, the number of aircraft in operation is set to double over the next two decades, warranting an expansion of facilities like those of Collins Aerospace.
Irene Makris, the president of Power & Controls at Collins Aerospace, remarked, "This investment ensures that we can grow alongside our customers in the Asia-Pacific market, which is a key growth area for us. Malaysia provides an excellent foundation for us to enhance our operations and meet the increasing demands of our clients."
As part of this expansion, Collins Aerospace plans to double its workforce in Malaysia, reflecting the burgeoning demand for skilled talent in aerospace maintenance and engineering. The investment is indicative of a broader trend towards creating a robust local workforce capable of supporting advanced MRO needs.
The newly expanded facility in Subang is set to feature advanced MRO capabilities, which will include support for various aircraft components such as air cycle machines, heat exchangers, valves, and next-generation starters. Moreover, enhancements will be seen in operational efficiencies through the integration of cutting-edge technologies including digital tier boards, eAndon systems, autonomous mobile robots, and real-time location systems that will optimize productivity and minimize turnaround times.
A key component of the Subang expansion is its focus on creating a smart building with an advanced management system designed to monitor and optimize resource consumption. The design incorporates safety systems and enables continuous improvement through scalability, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impacts in operations.
Minister of Transport from Malaysia, YB Loke Siew Fook, expressed positive sentiments regarding Collins Aerospace's expansion. He noted, "This is not just a confidence vote in our infrastructure but also in our people and their potential. We’ve envisioned a high-value, skills-intensive growth trajectory for our aviation sector, which Collins is helping to realize. As we enhance the local workforce, we are also building Malaysia's capability as a prime location for aerospace endeavors in the Asia-Pacific market."
Collins has been proactive in establishing its presence across the Asia-Pacific region, which includes recently introduced capabilities for electrical power systems along with environmental and airframe control systems. Currently, Collins operates with a workforce of 150 employees in Malaysia and employs around 10,000 individuals across 24 locations in eight countries within the region, including prominent nations such as Singapore, China, India, Australia, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines.
With over 50 years of dedicated service in the Asia-Pacific market, Collins Aerospace provides an array of services including MRO, manufacturing, engineering, project management, and customer support tailored to the dynamic requirements of military, commercial, and business aviation sectors.
