Historic New Funding for Civic Education by More Perfect and iCivics Promises to Enhance Engagement

Major Investment in Civic Learning

In a monumental step to enhance civic education across the United States, More Perfect and iCivics recently unveiled a significant funding commitment of over $56 million. This investment, spearheaded by prominent philanthropic organizations such as the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Stand Together, and the Bezos Family Foundation, aims to expand civic learning and service opportunities nationwide.

Aiming for a Civic Renaissance

This funding announcement comes just ahead of the Civics, Citizenship, and the Constitution Summit, a pivotal event co-hosted by More Perfect and iCivics at American University. The summit is set to take place on Constitution Day, September 17, 2025, symbolically aligning with the approach of the nation's 250th anniversary, a reflective timeframe for the future of American democracy.

John Bridgeland, the CEO of More Perfect, expressed gratitude for the support and emphasized the collective aim of renewing America’s civic spirit. Bridgeland remarked, "Leaders and institutions joined together to envision a civic learning and engagement moonshot, and we are so grateful the market is supporting the collective effort."

Objectives of the Funding

The funding will support a broad coalition of partners working with More Perfect, iCivics, and the National Constitution Center (NCC) to facilitate comprehensive civic education and service initiatives across the country. Key projects funded include:

  • - Civics Education for All: Developing history and civics education programs targeted at diverse populations including children, youth, and adults.
  • - Media and Technology Development: Creating innovative tools and resources for educators and students to enhance the learning experience.
  • - Civic Learning Programs: Launching local initiatives to engage communities as the country prepares for its 250th anniversary.
  • - Promoting Service: Offering new platforms for civic service to foster greater community involvement.

A Collective Vision

Louise Dubé, the CEO of iCivics, articulated the significance of this funding for the future of civic education. She noted, "This landmark investment in civic education by private philanthropy will help iCivics carry out the critical mission of ensuring high-quality civic education is available to all students." Dubé emphasized the importance of reflecting on the Constitution's enduring values during the upcoming Constitution Day celebrations.

Among the distinguished attendees at the summit will be representatives from the key funding organizations, who will share their commitment to fortifying American democratic principles. Dame Louise Richardson, serving as president of Carnegie and a former head of the University of Oxford, highlighted the necessity of civic education: "At this moment when our country stands so divided... civics education represents an initiative that has strong bipartisan support."

Building the Civic Framework

Looking ahead, the summit and associated programs are part of a larger effort to ensure future generations possess the civic knowledge and skills required to navigate and uphold America’s democratic yet complex society. As Brian Hooks, chairman and CEO of Stand Together, stated, “Our founding principles weren't intended to sit on a shelf in a textbook. They're meant to be lived out... as the nation's principles are reenvisioned to remain pertinent today.”

Mike Bezos, from the Bezos Family Foundation, underlined the importance of engaging the younger generations, affirming the Foundation’s dedication to nurturing civic knowledge in youth and elevating community voices.

In conclusion, Jeffrey Rosen, CEO of the National Constitution Center, completed the conversation by urging Americans to unite around the mission of preserving constitutional democracy. He remarked, "As we celebrate our commitment to constitutional democracy... let's unite around our commitment to ensuring future generations thrive."

The initiatives launched today have the potential to instill a renewed sense of civic responsibility and engagement in communities across America, reinforcing the foundations of democracy through education and participation.
