BIOTECHWORKS-H2 Secures Significant Grants for Hydrogen Initiatives in Malaysia

BIOTECHWORKS-H2, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, has received funding from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI). This grant will support the company's feasibility study (FS) for a hydrogen production project derived from waste in Malaysia, specifically in Penang State. The project aims to utilize urban waste as a resource for hydrogen generation, aligning with global trends towards waste management and clean hydrogen production.
Understanding the Project’s Importance
Malaysia faces significant challenges with rising urban waste and limited landfill capacity amid rapid economic growth. As countries strive for energy security and reduction of carbon emissions, the domestic production of clean hydrogen is becoming vital. This initiative by BIOTECHWORKS-H2 seeks to tackle both waste accumulation and the need for clean energy simultaneously. By validating the potential for hydrogen production from mixed municipal waste, the project aims to provide a solution that the region critically needs.
Project Goals and Methodology
The feasibility study will focus on:

Assessment of Waste Composition: Measuring the quantity and seasonal variations of urban waste in Penang.

Quality Tests of Optimized Processed Fuel (OPF): Utilizing the company’s proprietary pre-treatment technology to evaluate the suitability of OPF for gasification.

Economic and Regulatory Evaluation: Analyzing the economic viability and regulatory landscape around waste-derived hydrogen production.

Partnership Framework: Establishing a collaborative structure with local partners aimed at commercializing the technology.
It’s essential to note that BIOTECHWORKS-H2 does not just sell equipment; it aims to manage the entire process from pre-treatment to the production of high-purity hydrogen, ensuring efficiency and sustainability throughout.
OPF, or Optimized Processed Fuel, is a product developed through proprietary pre-treatment processes that allows for uniformity in waste materials. This innovation facilitates the production of high-purity hydrogen from otherwise complex and heterogeneous mixed waste types.
Technical Advantages
A major hurdle in producing hydrogen from waste is the variability in waste characteristics, including moisture content and composition. BIOTECHWORKS-H2 employs seven IoT devices and advanced AI for component analysis, enabling the creation of a standardized OPF that will enhance gasification efficiency. The system is designed not just to handle mixed waste but to refine it into a consistent product.
Additionally, the implementation of the digital traceability platform 'REBORN' allows for real-time monitoring of all processes from waste collection to hydrogen production and energy utilization, promoting transparency in carbon footprint reporting and enhancing compliance with environmental standards.
Collaboration with Local Partners
The feasibility study will be conducted in collaboration with local strategic partner
HUALANG ENERGY SDN BHD. Both companies entered into a strategic cooperation agreement in 2025, which lays the groundwork for joint efforts in advancing the FS, commercial application, and potential joint ventures.
Future Developments Towards Commercialization
Through various pilot projects and commercial demonstrations, BIOTECHWORKS-H2 is building its technical knowledge in producing hydrogen from waste. This feasibility study marks a critical step towards developing commercial plants, with plans to start construction of a commercial facility in Malaysia by 2027, targeting operational capabilities by 2028.
