Tile of Spain Awards 2024 Spotlights Innovative Architectural Designs
Tile of Spain Awards 2024
The prestigious Tile of Spain Awards recently celebrated its 23rd iteration, recognizing exceptional projects in architecture and interior design. Organized by Tile of Spain, which represents over 100 ceramic tile makers within the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER), this event highlights innovative designs using ceramic materials.
In late November, a panel of judges led by architect Rafael de La-Hoz Castanys convened to assess submissions at ASCER’s headquarters. The panel included renowned professionals such as José González Gallegos from Aranguren+Gallegos, Jonathan Arnabat and Jordi Ayala-Bril from Arquitectura G, David Quesada from Arquitectura y Diseño, and Susana Babiloni, a representative of the Castellón Architects’ Association.
Award Categories and Winners
The awards are divided into three main categories: Architecture, Interior Design, and Master’s Thesis Project. Here’s a detailed look at the winners:
Architecture: "A Circular Viewpoint"
Winner: Javier López Bautista
This project, located in Puebla de Arenoso near the scenic Mijares River reservoir, is designed as an observation area that serves both as a refuge and a place for reflection. The circular structure encourages visitors to engage with the landscape while paying homage to the site’s historical significance. Its design promotes a seamless flow with nature, allowing observers to pause, reflect, and appreciate their surroundings.
Interior Design: "Hill House"
Winner: studioNOLET
Originally built in the 1980s, Hill House is a quaint family residence in the lush hills of Catalonia that has recently undergone significant revitalization by studioNOLET. The design improvements harmonize the multi-tiered layout, featuring enhanced connections between the living spaces, terrace, and garden. The refreshing updates not only improve functionality but also contribute to a dynamic living experience.
Master’s Thesis Project: "A Post-Extractivist Retreat: A Spa and Leisure Center in Sierra de La Culebra"
Winner: Álvaro Pozo Pérez (CEU San Pablo University in Madrid)
This innovative project received high praise for its environmentally conscious approach, utilizing agricultural and fishery waste as energy sources. The intelligent application of ceramic tiles in complex geometric forms exemplifies contemporary architectural elegance while addressing sustainability.
