Liberty HealthShare: Celebrating 30 Years of Community-Based Health Sharing

Liberty HealthShare Celebrates 30 Years of Community-Based Healthcare

Liberty HealthShare, a pioneer in healthcare sharing, proudly celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, marking three decades since a group of families came together to establish a health-sharing ministry. It all began in rural Virginia when five families initiated the Gospel Light Mennonite Church, which emphasized the important tradition of members supporting each other by sharing healthcare costs. This grassroots model eventually evolved into what we know today as Liberty HealthShare®.

The Journey Begins

In the early days, the founders embraced a Mennonite practice that encouraged mutual aid among their community members. With the establishment of the Gospel Light Mennonite Church Medical Aid Plan, the premise was simple: people could alleviate the burden of medical expenses through faith-based support. As Liberty HealthShare's CEO, Dorsey Morrow, stated, "God has certainly graced Liberty HealthShare with His blessings," emphasizing the ministry's foundation in faith and community.

Growth and Recognition

The significant turning point for Liberty HealthShare came in 2010, following the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The leadership of the Gospel Light Mennonite Church recognized an opportunity to expand their services to a broader Christian community. They sought federal recognition for their program, which would exempt their members from ACA mandates.

In 2014, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services granted that recognition, positioning the Gospel Light Mennonite Church Medical Aid Plan among the limited number of recognized healthcare sharing ministries in the nation. This pivotal recognition set the stage for the establishment of Liberty HealthShare in Ohio, aimed at providing an alternative to government-mandated healthcare plans.

Through a collaborative vision and shared objectives, the two organizations merged, allowing Liberty HealthShare to manage the medical aid programs. This synergy has allowed the ministry to thrive, with many founding members still involved today, highlighting a successful model of communal support over three decades.

A Decade of Growth

Speaking on this milestone, Morrow reflected on the challenges faced but noted that despite numerous obstacles, the Liberty HealthShare team remained committed to their mission. “God has placed many storms before us and our resolve was tested numerous times,” he said. As they celebrate this anniversary, Morrow emphasized their focus on the future rather than solely looking back on their achievements.

Additionally, Liberty HealthShare offers a cost-effective, faith-based alternative to traditional health insurance. Members enjoy the flexibility to choose medical providers, access telehealth services, and discover prescription discounts—all while fostering a compassionate Christian community. The organization upholds transparency and stewardship, ensuring its programs align with members' needs.

Affordable Medical Programs

Liberty HealthShare provides a range of six affordable medical cost-sharing programs catering to individuals and families alike. Monthly contributions can start as low as $87 for individuals and $319 for families of four. Their new dental sharing program, Liberty Dental, is also noteworthy, offering members the ability to see any dentist of their choice at competitive monthly rates.

Since Liberty HealthShare is structured differently from traditional insurance, enrollment is straightforward and available year-round—no special events required for sign-up. This accessibility emphasizes their commitment to helping more individuals and families embrace a sharing-based model of healthcare.

Embracing the Future

As Liberty HealthShare commemorates its 30th year, they remain focused on enhancing their services for the future. Morrow ardently expressed a commitment to prayerfully explore ways to strengthen their mission and improve the ministry's position. This resolve speaks to the organization’s desire to continue expanding their community outreach and sharing initiatives, ensuring their services remain available to those seeking support.

Liberty HealthShare stands as a testament to the power of community and faith in addressing healthcare needs. As they embark on the next 30 years, they invite more individuals to join their compassionate community, devoted to supporting one another during life's medical challenges.
