QMAA Welcomes ITC's Tariff Recommendations for Quartz Imports to Protect American Jobs

The Quartz Manufacturing Alliance of America (QMAA) recently expressed its appreciation for the U.S. International Trade Commission's (ITC) recommendation regarding a safeguard remedy aimed at addressing the surge in imported quartz surfacing products. With the increasing presence of quartz imports inundating the U.S. market, the ITC's proposal includes a four-year tariff-rate quota (TRQ) along with strong tariff rates. This measure is designed to regulate the imports and mitigate the impact on the domestic industry.

In light of the ITC's recommendation, QMAA has called upon President Trump to take decisive action by imposing an effective quota and establishing a realistic tariff rate to ensure fair competition. The need for such a safeguard has become critical as many American businesses face hardships attributed to the influx of imports that degrade the market for locally-produced quartz products.

Luke Meisner, Counsel for QMAA, highlighted the importance of these recommendations by stating that they directly address the threats posed by imported products to the American quartz surface manufacturing sector, emphasizing the preservation of approximately 100,000 jobs at risk due to unfair trade practices.

Business Development Manager Daniel Vaz De Melo Sa from Guidoni USA shared the sentiment that the ITC’s acknowledgment of the unfair trade practices is a step in the right direction. He voiced hopes that President Trump would consider further action needed to protect manufacturing jobs, particularly in rural areas such as Georgia, that significantly rely on this industry for employment.

The issue of quartz imports has been characterized by various factors, including aggressive pricing driven by subsidies from foreign markets and the exploitation of labor forces, which have made it increasingly difficult for American manufacturers to compete on a level playing field. Cambria CEO Marty Davis underscored this point, asserting that the time-sensitive situation requires urgent action from the White House, with a proposed 50% tariff and firm quota limits being viewed as vital steps to stop the steady decline of domestic manufacturing. Davis articulates that the potential revival of the American quartz manufacturing industry rests on immediate government intervention.

Furthermore, Michael Morici, Vice President of Sales at LX Hausys, conveyed that the overabundance of imports undermines fair operations within the industry. He echoes the call for higher tariff rates and a clear quota cap, both crucial for stabilizing trade and allowing domestic manufacturers to regain their footing.

In conclusion, the QMAA remains committed to advocating for a fair and equitable marketplace that will benefit American quartz slab manufacturers and their workers. They believe that with initiatives like the ITC’s recommended tariffs, it is possible to foster a competitive environment that benefits the entire quartz surfacing industry, also positively impacting suppliers and fabricators throughout the supply chain. QMAA underscores the necessity of government intervention to restore balance, aiming to not only protect but also rejuvenate the American quartz manufacturing sector.
