The United States of Asian+America: A Digital Tribute to AAPI Innovators
The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) in collaboration with Wong Fu Productions has recently launched an inspiring digital series titled
'The United States of Asian+America.' Set to stream on YouTube, this series aims to spotlight the contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) individuals who have significantly impacted American culture and industry.
The Inspiration Behind the Series
As the United States moves towards its 250th anniversary, a glaring void remains in mainstream knowledge regarding the AAPI community's extensive history and influence. A staggering 53% of U.S. adults are unaware of any major events in Asian American history, and only 7% acknowledge the significant impact AAPI communities have had on U.S. culture, according to recent data from TAAF's STAATUS Index. This series is poised to change that narrative by bringing forth the untold stories of AAPI trailblazers who have been instrumental in shaping modern America.
Notable Trailblazers Featured
The series will delve into the lives and achievements of numerous noteworthy AAPI figures. Some of the featured guests include:
- - Ajay Bhatt, the innovator behind USB technology.
- - Sophia Chang, recognized as the first Asian woman in the hip-hop industry.
- - Steve Chen, co-founder of YouTube.
- - Dr. David Ho, a prominent medical researcher from Columbia University.
- - MC Jin, a pioneer in Asian American hip-hop.
- - Chef Martin Yan, a culinary icon and the host of Yan Can Cook!
- - Jeremy Lin, NBA champion and social entrepreneur.
Each episode will feature candid interviews designed to inspire viewers about the various contributions and experiences of the AAPI community.
Expanding Conversations on AAPI History
Norman Chen, CEO of TAAF, emphasized the urgency of highlighting these narratives, stating, "AAPI history is American history." This series seeks to redefine the understanding of what it means to be both Asian and American. Wong Fu Productions co-founder Philip Wang echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in the mission of celebrating AAPI stories that have remained largely untold in mainstream media.
Community Engagement through Storytelling
In conjunction with the digital series, TAAF has announced the
Asian+American Storytelling Initiative, encouraging creators nationwide to participate in sharing stories of significant AAPI figures or moments in U.S. history. This initiative invites public submissions to highlight AAPI contributions, with selected finalists receiving funding and mentorship to bring their ideas to fruition.
Limited Edition Collaborations
Additionally, TAAF is promoting AAPI-owned businesses through limited-edition merchandise. One collaboration includes a partnership with an AAPI-owned streetwear brand to launch a unique
Tang Denim jacket, where a portion of the profits will support local initiatives aimed at amplifying AAPI narratives. Pre-orders for the jacket are currently live, with an official release set for July 3.
Available Now on YouTube
'
The United States of Asian+America' is now streaming on YouTube, where TAAF invites the community to join the conversation using the hashtag
#AsianPlusAmerican on social media platforms.
This initiative represents a significant step in reclaiming AAPI history and fostering a deeper understanding of the contributions that AAPI individuals have made to American society. Viewers can look forward to new episodes rolling out through the end of 2026, each amplifying the voices and legacies of these remarkable change-makers.
