The Nuclear Company Announces Plans for Prosperity One in Kentucky
The Nuclear Company Unveils Prosperity One
The Nuclear Company has announced its ambitious project named Prosperity One, which is planned to be a nuclear energy campus located in Lewis County, Kentucky. This project aims to house up to six Westinghouse AP1000 reactors, producing approximately 6.6 gigawatts of electricity. Situated along the Ohio River in eastern Kentucky, Prosperity One is set to become the largest nuclear power complex in the United States and could rank among the largest in the world upon completion.
An Historic Initiative
With the US government emphasizing the need to bolster energy production, this project aligns with recent efforts to enhance domestic power generation capabilities. The announcement holds significant implications not only for energy supply in Kentucky but also for the economic landscape of the region, which has a long-standing history of supporting the nation’s electrical needs.
Joe Klecha, the CEO of The Nuclear Company, expressed pride in collaborating with local communities to apply their team’s collective expertise in nuclear energy. He emphasized the goal of creating sustainable jobs, strengthening the local tax base, and securing reliable energy for Kentucky. Klecha brings an extensive 33-year background in nuclear energy, including roles on naval submarines and leadership in major US nuclear parks.
Community Engagement and Investment
The Nuclear Company plans to work closely with local landowners and community leaders in Lewis County. They aim to prepare the site for construction and obtain the necessary federal permits to begin construction in 2028. The project's planning phase will address various critical aspects such as transportation, housing, environmental concerns, emergency preparedness, and water usage, all essential for a project of this magnitude.
Sam Howard, a lifelong resident of Lewis County and site owner, collaborates with The Nuclear Company in promoting the project. Howard shared his vision for developing significant infrastructure that would bring jobs and stimulate economic growth in the local community, especially considering the region's past struggles with unemployment: "I want my nine grandchildren to have the opportunity to stay here," he stated.
Pioneering Nuclear Energy in Kentucky
Lewis County is among the first in Kentucky to apply for the designation of a community prepared for nuclear energy utilization, seeking status from the Kentucky Office of Nuclear Development. This initiative gained unanimous support from county leaders, who held public meetings and voted overwhelmingly to apply for this status.
Following the site determination, The Nuclear Company is preparing for engineering, environmental, regulatory, and commercial processes essential for the construction of Prosperity One. Initial efforts include site characterization, geotechnical studies, environmental assessments, interconnection planning, and preparation for federal licensing in the nuclear sector.
The approval process will involve navigating the regulatory landscape with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to secure the necessary permits for construction. This initiative has the potential to not only transform the energy landscape in Kentucky but also set a precedent for future nuclear projects across the United States.
